Watch a CMC class and you'll see it: people who show up calm, work hard and quietly hold a standard. You become who you train around. The part of CMC you can't photograph is the culture: strong without ego, warm without softness, grown adults who take the work seriously and themselves lightly. Calm. Capable. Confident. That's who's standing next to you.

Track of the week: Crowded House, Something So Strong.

From the Tuesday 9:15 class. Warm and unhurried, for a room settling into its work.

Soreness the next day mostly tells you the work was new. Not that it was good.

It shows up after unfamiliar movement, especially the lowering part of a lift, and it fades as the body gets used to the same work. Strength keeps building long after the soreness stops showing up.

So a new block can leave you stiff for a day or two, and the weeks after can feel easier while you keep getting stronger. A session that leaves you ready to come back later in the week did its job.

"I used to be fit."

I hear it at the door more than any other sentence. Usually with an apology attached. I let it go. I got slack.

I don't buy the letting-go part.

If you grew up in the eighties or nineties, you didn't train. You rode a bike because that's how you got to your mate's house. You walked to the shop. You played until the streetlights came on.

You weren't disciplined. You were outside.

Then we solved the friction. The car, the delivery, the desk, the phone. All good things. But the movement was attached to the friction, and it left when the friction did.

That's not a character flaw. It just means the thing that used to come free now has to be chosen. On purpose, in a booked hour.

The question worth asking now isn't how fit you used to be. It's what you'll need for the next thirty years.

Strength creates peace. It just used to come with the bike.

CMC is a proper facility: room to move, no queue for equipment, parking front and back. Small studios usually come with a trade, one small room and a lap of the block for a park. We never accepted that trade. It still feels personal, and your coach still knows your name. Big enough to breathe. Small enough to belong.

A good session often starts before you walk in. Six things that help.

Sleep the night before. It counts for more than the coffee that morning.
Eat something a couple of hours out. Not a big meal, just something.
Have a glass of water on the way.
Arrive five minutes early. Rushing in brings the rush into the room.
Tell the coach if something is niggling. The work can be adjusted around it, and that conversation is easier before the first set than halfway through.
Leave the phone in the bag.

None of these are hard. Together they change how the session feels.

A quiet truth about a lot of gyms: no one there knows if you turned up. You swipe a card, guess at the weight, guess at the form, and the only feedback is being tired. That's a coaching problem, and willpower won't fix it. Every session at CMC is coached, by someone who knows your name and adjusts the work to the body in front of them.

Before anyone arrives, the room gets set: the light down, the music chosen rather than shuffled, the floor cleared. None of it is for show. It is so that when you walk in, the space is already doing half the work of settling you. You have come from a day that has been asking things of you since seven this morning. The room should not be one more thing that asks.

You can tell a lot about a place by how it treats light. Plenty of rooms people train in have none: low ceilings, mirrors, the hum of machines. We built CMC the other way around. Natural light, air, room to move. The room you train in is part of the work, and your body knows cramped from calm. That's the whole pitch.

Three from a recent Thursday 6:15 strength class.

Bill Withers to open the morning gently. Earth, Wind & Fire once the room warms up. The Living End when the work gets serious.

The early crowd has good taste.
