Ok trendsetters, time for a cricket update following yesterdays presentations.

Firstly just a quick recap of the season.
The side competing in ATCA LO5 division finished in 6th spot with a 10 win, 8 loss and 1 draw record.
At various times through the season the side shared top spot and in general a position in the coveted top 4.
Sadly a disappointing final three games resulting in losses saw the side slip out the finals contention and into an early pre season.

In all we used 22 players across the season including 7 lads who played their first games for the Chics.

Stand out performers included Dave Loechel who had a fine all round summer. He played 12 games and batted 10 times in making 258 runs at an average of 39.86 with a highest score of 74 not out.
With the ball he snared 27 wickets at an average of 9.11 with best figures of 5/3.
The skipper Raza Ibrahim made 285 runs at an average of 19 with a highest score of 50.
At the bowling crease Raza also took 27 wickets at an average of 14 with best figures of 4/22.
Jason Wear consistently gave us a dependable start opening the batting and his 438 runs came at an average of 31.29. Wiz had a highest score of 74.
He made 2 half centuries, had one score in the 40’s, three scores in the 30’s and passed 20 another 4 times.
Tommy Drew continued his improvement with the ball and his 17 wickets came at the average of 15.
His best figures were 4/18. He continually bowled a good line and length continually keeping the opposition batters on the their toes.

Presentations were held at The Albion Hotel - a fine sponsor of the KFCC.
For those not in the know, The Albion is a stones throw from the Kilburn RSL and in moments of quiet we could actually hear the dulcet tones of mighty Mick O’Hara entertaining the masses at the RSL with stories of his illustrious cricketing career at Blair Athol Reserve. I’m sure the crowd were putty in his well crafted hands.
Oh what we’d give to have his services on the cricket field again.

Anyway, onto the awards…

Our medal for best and fairest is named after club great John Carr who was a long time servant of Kilburn Cricket as a player and administrator.
He was a Chics premiership player.
John also captained our A grade side for a good length of time.

Just to finish up I would like to pass on my thanks to David Heyzer (The Big Kahuna at ATCA) and his able off sider Shane McMillan for their continued assistance dealing with any concerns or issues I had this season. ATCA continues to be a wonderfully run cricket association.
To Steve Marotti from PAE Council and it’s curators thanks for getting Blair Athol Reserve up to scratch each home game.
Thanks to Raza Ibrahim who took on the captaincy at short notice this season and lead the side in a positive manner throughout.
To our loyal band of supporters Kerrin, Larry (Chief Motivator) and Mike - thanks for your continued support and advice.
To Jake Smith our cricket club scorer I say a big thank you for your continued dedication to the cause on a weekly basis ensuring our scorebook is the best in the business.

Cheers to Chairman Rusty for arranging yesterdays luncheon at The Albion.

Time to recharge the batteries now - if you have some spare time in the off season then don’t hesitate to get out and cheer the footballers on.
The A grade are going for a hat trick of flags this season. They’ve made another jump up the grades into division 3 and have started the season well winning their opening two games.
The B grade under the guidance of master tactician Polky are looking to redeem themselves after finishing third last season. The great man will do everything in his power to lift the premiership cup again.

If you know of anyone looking for a game of cricket please send them my way as we are always on the lookout for people to join us.

Cheers,

Greg Matthews

We’ll get there just before the days is done but it’s time to wish Jake Smith (aka The Doyen) a very happy 25th birthday. The great man gives his time to the cricket side each week as our esteemed scorer. Hope you’ve had a fab day my man.

Righto champions, time for a little run down from last weeks Round 19 ATCA LO5 (proposed) blockbuster v Rostrevor OC.
We took the trip to St Paul’s College and were greeted with a rock hard and green pitch.
Weather was slightly warm and the hot northerly winds were delightful once you embraced them.
Just to bring everyone up to speed the Chics sat in 4th spot prior to this game and a win would secure a finals spot as this was the final round.
On the other side of things if Rostrevor were victorious and Gepps Cross lost their match then they would take 4th spot.
Alternatively if Kilburn lost and Gepps Cross won then Gepps would make the top 4!!!
Got all that?
Bottom line is we needed to win.
Fair to say our post Xmas form has been somewhat patchy.
Still we were keen to put in a good performance and clinch a finals birth.
Knowing our batting can be an issue the ROCS skipper sent us in upon winning the toss.
The first 4 overs saw us get to 27 without losing a wicket.
Then things went a bit wayward.
0/27 soon became 9/61 as wickets fell at a fair rate.
To quote the great Bill Lawry ‘it was all happening’
There were snicks behind, there were blokes losing their stumps, LBW’s, general field catches and a s**t load of mayhem basically.
A 22 run last wicket stand got us to 83 with Jason Wear top scoring with 23 and number 11 Ray Hedland making 14.
We went to the tea interval a little shell shocked.
Could we snare early wickets and put ROCS under the pump?
The short answer is no.
One of their openers made a run a ball 59 to really put us in our place.
Ray snared a couple of wickets - one with his mediums and then showing his full repertoire he turned to spin at one stage and channeling the great Bishen Bedi snared another.
But trendsetters it mattered not as our opponents were clearly the better side and ran out comfortable 7 wicket winners.
Gepps lost their game too so ROCS took the final spot in the top 4. Well done lads.

Kilburn 83 (23.5 overs)
Jason Wear 23
Sugar Ray Hedland 14

Defeated by

ROCS 3/84 (20.2 overs)
Ray Ray 2/12 off 3 overs

A bitterly disappointing way to finish the season which at one stage had the side playing some real good cricket and a strong possibility of seeing finals action.

The lads won 10 games, lost 8 and had one draw to finish 6th out of 12 sides.
We used 22 players across the season of which 7 played for Kilburn for the first time.
Standout performers for Kilburn in 2024/25 were Jason ‘Wiz’ Wear who was our leading run scorer with 438 at an average of 31.2 whilst also being very solid and dependable in the field. So often Wiz gave us a good start with his common sense batting.
Skipper Raza Ibrahim had a fine all round summer with 285 runs at 19 and also took 27 wickets at 14 and snared 9 catches.
Golden Balls Dave Loechel also had a handy all round season contributing 258 runs and 27 wickets at 9.
T Shirt Tommy Drew showed continued improvement all season and he finished with 22 wickets at 15.
I thank all players for their efforts throughout the season and pay particular thanks to Raza for taking on the captaincy at short notice.
To the new lads who joined us this season - thank you very much and I hope you all enjoy many more fruitful seasons at Kilburn in the future.
LO5 was a tight division throughout the season and to have 6 sides in contention for a finals spot going into the last round was a great thing.
Best wishes to Hectorville, Gaza, Concordia and Rostrevor in the finals and their quest for that beautiful premiership.
Many thanks to Steve Marotti from the PAE Council for for his assistance and time this season.
Thanks also to the curators for their efforts in preparing the Blair Athol Reserve for us to play on when we could.
To David Heyzer and Shane McMillan from ATCA - thanks for everything you do for the competition and for giving us the opportunity to play in a well run association. LO5 was generally played in good spirits and that stems from you guys.
Many thanks to Michael Barton and the Hope Valley CC for arranging and preparing St Paul’s College for us last week when we needed a ground at short notice.

To Larry our Chief Officer of Morale and Motivation I thank you for you support.
To Kerrin Martin thank you for your continued support of Kilburn cricket.
To Jake Smith - aka The Doyen. Thank you for your selflessness every week in travelling around with us as the teams scorer. The last two seasons have been a delight having you on board and the scorebook has never been in better hands.

Sadly last week in LO5 Junaid Khan from our friends at Old Concordians CC passed away during their match v Prince Alfred.
To Junaid’s family and the Old Concordians CC we pass on our sincere condolences.
Likewise our pals at Prince Alfred who were also severely impacted our thoughts are with you guys.
We never expect to go to cricket and have such a tragedy take place.
Kilburn have had the pleasure of playing against Concordia and Junaid over the last two seasons and he was a delight to play against.

So with the season over we go to the off season knowing we have to improve a tad in order to make finals in 2025/26.
With that comes recruitment. If you or you know of someone looking for a game at Kilburn then please send them my way for a discussion.

Presentation details and winners announced when that info comes to hand.

Righto folks, time for a recap from Saturdays massive round 18 LO5 clash v Old Concordians.
Both sides were locked on the same points on the ladder - 3rd v 4th with the victor assured of a finals spot.
The game was moved mid week from picturesque Blair Athol Reserve to not so picturesque EP Nazer Reserve down Semaphore way.
We set out to take up camp underneath the verandah of the derelict old club rooms only to be greeted by a group of homeless people who called that area theirs so we had to think fast and venture to the outer side under the shade of a tree.
The pitch was rock hard & the outfield a tad dry & the temperature pushing toward the 40 mark. Still Concordia had no hesitation in sending us in (likely on the back of last weeks sensational collapse).
Raza and a Wiz took to the crease looking to get us off to a fast start. Sadly our leading run scorer for the season Wiz went with the score on 11.
Raza continued on with Golden Balls Loechel getting the score to 36 before the skipper went for a nice 24.
Partnerships become hard work as Concordia bowled a lovely line and length backed up by solid catching and ground fielding.
Boom recruit Peter Richardson was easily the pick of the batters making a lovely little 33 but wickets continued to fall.
Matthews battled hard for 23 not out and Sugar Ray Hedland ensured the crowd was on its feet as he brought up his first runs for Kilburn with a massive 6 over mid wicket.
From 2/61 it was all out for a rather disappointing 126 on a good pitch.
After a short tea break the lads set out to snare some early wickets to get the opposition on the back foot.
Their openers got to 25 before the good guys got on a roll taking 4/10 to have us on top. The Sheikh Zahir grabbing two and Golden Balls and Sodsy snaring a wicket each to really have us buzzing.
From there it got a tad more difficult as a fine 70 run 5th wicket stand took place to wrestle away any hold we had on the game.
Then 3 late wickets had things interesting again as Sodsy continued to be a handful and Drewy found his second wind.
At 7/121 we were a sneaky chance but alas a couple of lovely cover drives from their number 8 saw them over the line to record a hard fought win.
Richardson snared 3 catches behind the pegs and all bowlers had a crack.
The loss somehow still saw the side remain in fourth spot with one round remaining.

Kilburn 126 (38.4 overs)
Richardson 33
Raza 24
Matthews 23 not out
Loechel 21

Defeated by

Old Concordians 7/129 (36 overs)
Loechel 2/10 off 7 overs
The Sheikh 2/26 off 6 overs
Sodsy 2/37 off 9 overs

This week is the final round of the minor round.
The lads take on Rostrevor at St Paul’s College with a win required to cement a finals spot for season 2024/25.
If you don’t want to sit at Blair Athol Reserve watching the grass grow then the lads would love any support up the hill at St Paul’s as we endeavour to ensure a finals spot.
Game starts at 1230pm.

*many thanks to Steve from PAE Council for his help and understanding in recent times sourcing and oval for the side.
Also to David Heyzer and Shane McMillan from ATCA and to Hope Valley Cricket Club with their understanding and assistance in obtaining an oval for us to play on this week - you’re help is greatly appreciated.

04/03/2025

Ok folks, quick recap from last weeks big game v Rostrevor Old Collegians played at semi picturesque and a bit barren McNally Oval.
I think our hosts won the toss and elected to have a hit first.
They were out of the blocks early with one of their openers compiling a 15 ball 30 before we steadied to reduce them to 4/40 courtesy of ‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew and the skipper Raza snaring two wickets a piece.
Ground fielding was decent - catching sort of ok.
But we took wickets at regular intervals including the last three for one to keep them to an even 100.
The afore mentioned bowlers finishing with 3 each and ‘Golden Balls’ Loechel 2 and Zaki snaring one as well as a sensational run out from teenage prodigy Sujjad.

The previous two weeks had seen some rather ordinary afternoon tea’s dished up (a combined score of 4.3/20) but I’m pleased to reveal our good pals at Rostrevor really came to the party with a rather delightful spread.
Particular credit goes to the fine chap who presented the delicious home made sausage rolls and chilli cransky’s.

Anyway, after loading up on food Raza and Wiz strode to the crease full of intent in chasing down the required total for victory and a lock in the top 4 for finals.
Sadly both men and number 3 Richo couldn’t reach double figures as we hit a snag at 3/44.
The opposition were up and about before two little partnerships kept us on track.
Matty Justice attempted to hold it all together and his dismissal for a well made 35 with the score at 62 got us on track for a bit.
Loechel and the younger Smith brother then got it to 4/81 before s**t got too funky and wickets fell a tad too often.
4/81 became 6/81 quick.
7/85 was shortly after.
Drewy and the veteran Matthews eeked out 11 of the toughest runs to have the good guys one hit away from a hard fought victory but alas some Rostrevor chap decided enough was enough and finished the game with three wickets in 5 balls to deny us a vital win.
Considering a finals spot was on the line this was clearly our most disappointing loss for the season.
Still we live to fight another day - the lads sit in 4th spot on the ladder (equal third) a game clear of fifth placed Gepps Cross with two rounds to play.

Rostrevor 100 (26.2 overs)
‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew 3/30 from 7 overs
Raza The Magnificent 3/36 off 8 overs
‘Golden Balls’ Loechel 2/22 (cue Richie Benaud) off 7 overs

Defeated

Kilburn 96 (32 overs)
Matty Justice 35

On a side note let it be known the final two rounds initially scheduled for Blair Athol Reserve have now been moved to alternate venues.

This week - round 18 on March 8 we now play Old Concordians at EP Nazer Reserve at Ethelton.

Round 19 on March 15 we now play Rostrevor Old Collegians at St Paul’s College in Gilles Plains.

No change to start times.

This will have the lads on the road for 8 of the last 9 games.

A win this week keeps the lads in the top 4 but can go as high as second pending other results.
With two rounds remaining 7 sides can still make the finals.

Photos from Kilburn Cricket Club's post 22/02/2025

Ok Kilburnians, time for a recap from the last month of high octane LO5 cricket.
I’ve been a tad slack but due to public demand and a few threats from several team mates it’s time to touch base.

Let’s go back to February 1 for the highly anticipated clash with Golden Grove at Golden Grove.
It was a tad anti climatic as our hosts had unfortunately left the sprinklers on overnight and the pitch was a tad wet and soggy forcing the game to be called off and the good guys from Kilburn taking the win by forfeit.
It did provide an opportunity to experience the delightful facilities on offer at Golden Grove.
Clearly plenty of money on hand in that electorate.

Next up was the huuuuuuuuge home clash with fellow finals aspirants Hectorville at picturesque Blair Athol Reserve.
A big crowd congregated but left bitterly disappointed as the hosts were made short work of.
Batting first the good guys simply couldn’t put enough runs on the board due to Hectorville’s excellent line and length bowling and the inability to take early wickets with the ball didn’t help our cause.
Kilburn 7/157 (40 overs)
Golden Balls Dave Loechel 74 not out
Jason ‘Wiz’ Wear 23
Greg Matthews 20

Defeated by

Hectorville 3/162 (26.1 overs)
‘Disco’ Matty Stewart 2/28 off 5 overs

We then travelled into the city for round 15 to tackle the red hot PAOC.
The hosts took to the batting crease first and we saw what was likely the most technically correct batting we’ve encountered this summer.
Often in the semi professional leagues like we play we come across some lairising batting and stuff not really out of the coaches manual but PAOC kept it old school.
They were in a strong spot at drinks with just the one wicket lost which enabled a strong back end to their innings to be played.
With the bat we simply weren’t up to the task and were never really in the hunt to chase down their score.

PAOC 4/219 (40 overs)
Raza The Magnificent 2/34 off 7 overs

Defeated

Kilburn 115 (35.3 overs)
Zahir Said 24
Raza 21
Wiz 19

So two successive losses after 6 wins on the trot put the lads back in their box.
Training was intense through the week.
There were time trials, skin fold tests and a few home truths said.
We looked each other in the eye and demanded more if we wanted to play finals.
Then we get to today.
Could The Chics find their mojo?
A big crowd gathered in the searing heat out at Lindblom Park in swampy Pooraka as we tackled Athelstone.
Winning the toss we decided to have a hit first on a rock hard pitch.

Kilburn 6/298 (40 overs)
Wiz 74
Richo 50 off 36 balls
Junior 45 not out off 25 balls
Raza 33
Sodsy 25 off 16 balls
Stewy 23

Defeated

Athelstone 99 (31.4 overs)
‘Sugar’ Ray Hedland 4/17 off 4.4 overs
Zahir 2/22 off 8 overs
Stewy 1/20 off 5 overs
‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew 1/6 off 7 overs.

Some fine catching by the lads was pleasing to see.
Big ups to Ray Ray for career best figures for the Chics.
As always many thanks to our scorer extraordinaire Jake Smith (aka The Doyen) for his dedication on the scorebook each week. We really appreciate your work mate.

So with 3 rounds remaining we go to a record of 10 wins 5 losses and 1 draw to sit 3rd on the ladder.
It’s a tight affair with Hectorville on 115 points and then followed by Old Concordians, Kilburn and Gaza all on 105 points.

With three rounds to go there a 6 sides in the mix to play finals.

Next week we travel to McNally Oval and take on Rostrevor Old Collegians.
Tickets selling fast people to get in soon to snare any remaining tickets.
For those that miss out Channel 7 and Fox Cricket will show the game live.

Ok cricket lovers, just a little recap from yesterdays massive LO5 encounter with our neighbours Gepps Cross.
The game was played at Duncan Fraser Reserve #2 under blue skies and delightful sunshine.
Our hosts batted first on a nice looking pitch and found runs hard to come by courtesy of some excellent line and length bowling.
Their openers did manage to put on 42 for the first wicket before Zahir struck in the 18th over.
From there wickets fell on a regular basis as 0/42 soon became 4/64 and the wheel had turned.
A few highlights to report on - as usual the skip Raza The Magnificent got amongst things with a triple wicket maiden. Cruelly denied a second career hat trick amongst that (if ATCA had it we’d have used the DRS for sure) but he responded the following ball by removing middle stump.
‘Golden Balls’ Dave Loechel took two nice catches to go along with a fine 2/19 whilst ‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew continued his good form with a tidy little 2/20.
He has requested we mention that back home in country Victoria his dad actually took three wickets yesterday and is the superior fast bowler in the family. Nicely done Mr Drew.
The skip has also requested we mention his fine running catch he snared in the deep - fielding at long off he ran in 25 metres at full pace before diving full stretch and taking the catch of the day millimetres off the turf.
In the end we managed to roll our neighbours for 117.
After some afternoon tea (credit to the Gepps player without brought along the delightful banana cake) we took to the crease keen to chase down the runs.
Raza made a quick fire 19 and Wiz continued his stellar season with an eye catching 29 before Matty Justice - the man who loves a cinnamon donut more than he loves anything else compiled a cheeky little run a ball 45 not out and he was ably supported by Dave Loechel who remained 20 not out as we passed the score in the 21st over to record our 5th successive victory.

Gepps Cross 117 (35.2 overs)
Raza The Magnificent 3/29 off 9 overs with 4 maidens
‘Golden Balls’ Dave Loechel 2/19 off 7.2 overs
‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew 2/20 off 7 overs

Defeated by

Kilburn 2/120 (20.1 overs)
‘Donuts’ Justice 45 not out
Jason ‘Wiz’ Wear 29
Golden Balls Loechel 20 not out
Raza 19

The win takes the side to a record of 8 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw and we now go equal top with Old Concordians on the ladder.
Positions for the final four still remain incredibly tight and with 7 rounds remaining each win is so important.

Thanks to Gepps Cross who are always a good bunch of lads to play against and play the game in excellent spirits.

Next week we are away again this time to Golden Grove.
Tickets available at usual outlets.

Righto trendsetters, time for a recap of yesterday’s sold out LO5 cricket match v Ingle Farm.
The game was played at (not so picturesque) Ingle Farm Primary.
After a short 35 minute hike from the car park up a dirt track and past several brown snakes 🐍 we reached the playing arena with mild signs of dehydration and the odd team member reporting hallucinations in the searing heat.
Ahh how I yearn for the good old days when one could simply park their car inside the school grounds and walk the 50 metres to the oval but alas, I digress.
The good guys won the toss and chose to roll the arm over first on a lovely pitch. Perhaps the above mentioned hallucinations prompted that decision at the toss.
Anyway it took several overs for things to happen for the Chics but when it did we got in a big roll as the hosts went from 0/10 to 4/14 in rapid time.
Catching and ground fielding was at times questionable (perhaps the hallucinations at play again???) but we soldiered on ultimately rolling Ingle Farm for 60 in the 25th over.
‘Golden Balls’ Dave Loechel after taking 5/3 v Ingle Farm earlier in the season was the best with the ball claiming 3/7.
‘Sugar’ Ray Hedland sporting a fantastic new hair do bowled with vigour as he snared himself 2 wickets and ‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew continued his recent good form with the ball with 2/9.
Having missed last weeks game with a severe case of jock itch Matty Justice was given free reign as he opened the batting with the elegant Jason ‘Wiz’ Wear.
The pair made light work of the run chase as they combined for a lovely 59 run opening stand before Matty departed for a quick fire 34 off 21 deliveries.
The chase was completed in the 9th over as Wiz remained 19 not out.

Ingle Farm 60 (24.1 overs)
Dave Loechel 3/7 off 5.1 overs
Tommy Drew 2/9 off 6 overs
Ray Ray Hedland 2/13 off 3 overs

Defeated by

Kilburn 1/63 (8.4 overs)
Matty Justice 34
Jason Wear 19 not out

So a comprehensive 9 wicket victory sees the side go to a 7 win, 3 loss, 1 draw record and move up to third spot (equal second) on a very tight ladder.
This week we head up Grand Junction Road to take on fourth placed Gepps Cross in a massive game.

Just a shout out to Ingle Farm - to put things in perspective this is their fourth side and made up of a couple of wily veterans and plenty of young junior cricketers still learning their trade.
They play the game in good spirit and keep their heads high throughout. The aim ultimately is that sometime down the track these youngsters become the backbone of their senior sides.
We certainly wish them well for the future.

15/01/2025

Righto folks, time for a quick cricket update from last weeks big LO5 game v Golden Grove which was played at deeeeeeeeeeeeeeelightful Blair Athol Reserve.
After a few weeks off for the Xmas and New Years break the lads were keen to put in a strong showing and to continue their pre break form.
The visitors won the toss and elected to pad up first.

Golden Grove 105 (37.2 overs)
‘T Shirt’ Tommy Drew 3/23 off 4.2 overs
Dave Loechel 2/11 off 5 overs
Raza The Magnificent 2/19 off 8 overs

Defeated by

Kilburn 3/108 (32.5 overs)
Jason ‘Wiz’ Wear 48 not out
‘Disco’ Matty Stewart 38 not out

A fine all round bowling performance which saw 6 players take wickets backed up by a very good fielding effort saw us restrict the visitors on a good pitch.
Stewy and Sods bowled with excellent pace and continually beat the bat and Raza and Zakir snaffled 2 catches each.
Things got a little shaky with the bat as we slipped to 3/46 before Wiz and Stewy combined for an unconquered 62 ran stand to see the good guys home by 7 wickets.

The win sees the side go to a record of 6 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw to sit 5th on the ladder just win win off top spot in a tightly contested division.

This week we travel up the road to take on Ingle Farm in another big encounter.

Tickets available from the usual outlets but please note Rusty and DR’s interpretive dance routines are only performed at Chic’s home games due to contractual obligations.
