HANDLING ADVERSITY
Life mirrors sport — sport mirrors life.

Guillermo del Toro’s simple question, “AND?”, offers a powerful way to respond when life challenges us.

Acknowledge the hurt. Share it. Sit in the discomfort. Then ask yourself: AND… what’s my next step?

A loss, a setback or a disappointment can hurt deeply. Give yourself time to process it, then focus on what you can do next.

We can’t always choose our circumstances, but we can choose our response. Don’t let the challenge define you. Let what you learn from it help you grow.

LETHAL & FAGES
TWO COACHES. TWO THREE-PEATS. ONE REMARKABLE LEGACY. 🦁🏆

The strikingly similar Brisbane coaching records of Leigh Matthews and Chris Fagan tell an extraordinary story.

Matthews delivered three consecutive premierships in 2001–2003. Fagan has matched that achievement in 2024–2026.

Their six flags, alongside Fitzroy’s eight, bring the combined Fitzroy–Brisbane Lions heritage to 14 VFL/AFL premierships—a total surpassed only by Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon, with 16 each.

At the time of the 1996 merger, Fitzroy hadn’t won a premiership for 52 years, while the Brisbane Bears had never won a senior AFL flag.

Two remarkable coaches have since guided the Lions to two golden eras.

Different personalities. Remarkably similar records. An enduring legacy.

A leopard can change its spots.

Former Brisbane AFL Captain Dayne Zorko has always brought passion and intensity to his football. Earlier in his career, that intensity sometimes spilled into antagonism, questioning umpires and undisciplined moments.

Today, he is a three-time premiership player in a Brisbane team led by Chris Fagan. That journey shows that a player’s edge can be valuable without excusing every behaviour that comes with it.

2026 Captains’ Zak Butters (Port Adel) and Toby Greene (GWS) have amassed 18 matches of suspension and more than $100,000 in AFL fines between them. After Hawthorn’s preliminary final loss, Captain James Sicily (8 matches of suspension) was fined $10,000 for his conduct toward umpire Hayden Meyer. He had been reported as telling Meyer, “You cost us the game.”

These are talented footballers whose teams have not experienced the ultimate success in their tenure. Their talent should never make poor behaviour something a club feels it must accept.

A strong leader can challenge a player’s behaviour while still believing in the player. That gives them room to grow and gives the whole team a better standard to follow.

AFL Prelim Final Umpire Meyer abused

“When we win, our personality shows. When we lose, our character shows.”

AFL umpire Hayden Meyer says he felt threatened by the abuse directed at him and describes bottles being thrown after the game. No one involved in sport should have to face that.

It was encouraging to hear Hayden speak about the sincere apology he received. Owning our behaviour matters. So does choosing respect in the heat of the moment.

Immediately after Hawthorn’s Preliminary Final loss, Sam Mitchell appeared to focus on umpiring decisions and expected those decisions to be reviewed.

Two days later, he spoke about his players taking responsibility for their own performance rather than focusing on decisions outside their control.

Both messages may have merit in isolation—but together, they can be confusing.

Leadership means modelling the same accountability and behaviour we expect from our players.

Sydney Swans coach Dean Cox showed outstanding sportsmanship and class by congratulating Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir and his players following the Swans’ Preliminary Final loss.

When you win, your personality shows.
When you lose, your character shows.

Respect the game—in victory and defeat.
