Another game. Another training. Another opportunity to lead.
You can demand effort…or you can inspire it.
You can enforce standards…or you can build ownership of them.
Because when people feel heard, valued and part of something bigger. They don’t just comply. They commit.
Empowerment doesn’t lower standards. It raises them, because they become their standards.
That’s where culture is built.
That’s where better humans are formed.

UMPIRE PILE-ON
Another round of AFL footy, another opportunity to pile on the umpires.
The pile-on crowd is out in force.
The narrative?
“The umpires are having a terrible year.”
Even dragging the ARC into it.
But the umpires aren’t the ARC.
This is what happens when criticism turns into a feeding frenzy — it gives everyone permission to join in.
Let’s be clear:
The game is imperfect.
The ARC is imperfect.
Players, coaches and umpires are imperfect.
Where humans and technology are involved, mistakes are inevitable.
Perfection doesn’t exist.
But the scrutiny?
Relentless. Personal. Excessive.
We dissect umpires like they’re never allowed to be human and get it wrong.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth — most people piling on wouldn’t last a day under that level of review in their own job.
If we keep normalising the pile-on, don’t be surprised when respect disappears from the game altogether.
Approach sport with open hearts, not clenched fists.

Mean Spirited Comments
On the eve of ANZAC Day, I came across comments on a post that really made me think.
One message: Leadership, communication, respect.
The response: ridicule, abuse, disrespect.
Young people are watching it all.
What are we teaching them?
Approach sport with open hearts, not clenched fists.

First opportunity to work with AFL Tasmania Talent Pathway players and parents… and what a start.
Over two days, close to 300 people leaned in, reflected, and committed to being better — not just as athletes, but as people.
At one point today, with 165 in the room…you could have heard a pin drop.
That tells you everything.
The honesty, the ownership, and the willingness to shift from knowing better to doing better was outstanding.
Because this is what it’s really about…Not just developing talented footballers — But developing great humans.
Respect for umpires.
Respect for opponents.
Respect for each other.
Sportsmanship. Respect. Try your hardest.
Environments don’t create themselves…people do.
Thank you to AFL Tasmania for the opportunity and for your leadership in caring for your players, coaches and families.
This is how culture shifts 👊

People won’t care how much you know… until they know how much you care.
What a night with the Bendigo Junior Football League.
A room full of coaches, parents and leaders choosing to reflect, take ownership and commit to creating better environments for young people through sport.
👉 Sportsmanship. Respect. Try your hardest.
Simple words. Powerful actions.
A huge thank you to Paul Colbert, Jake and Paul Hamilton for your leadership, organisation and genuine commitment to creating environments where kids, coaches, parents and umpires can all feel safe, supported and thrive.
This doesn’t happen by chance… it happens because people care enough to lead. Let’s keep building environments that bring out the best in everyone.

Junior Umpire Abuse
As a parent, you expect your child to be safe in sport?
So does the parent of a teenage umpire.
Yet every weekend…adults yell, abuse, and intimidate kids, male and female who are simply trying their hardest.
Let that sink in.
If we want safe and inclusive environments, we don’t get to choose who that applies to.
They’re not just umpires. They’re someone’s child.
Be the example. Not the problem.

Community winter sport is about to begin.
Kids will learn a lot this season. Not just about sport… but about life.
What type of coach will you choose to be?
The coach who models respect, composure and effort…Or the one who chases results, blames others and reacts to every umpire’s decision?
The environment we create becomes the culture our kids experience.
Let’s make this a season where sportsmanship, respect and try your hardest lead the way.

NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE SA
Country football communities are special.
When people know each other beyond the boundary line as neighbours, parents and friends, the way we behave at the footy really matters.
It was a privilege to spend time with the passionate people of the North Eastern Football League exploring the values of sportsmanship, respect and try your hardest.
What stood out most was the honesty in the room. Many reflected openly on the behaviours we sometimes see in sport, particularly around umpire decisions, and made a commitment to model something better for the young players watching.
Because kids don’t just listen to what we say. They watch what we do.
Thank you to Nic and Scott for their leadership and commitment to strengthening the culture of junior football across the league.
When adults lead with respect, young players learn that the real success in sport isn’t just winning games…….it’s becoming good people.
