💙 Let's get behind our Nipper Alana! 💙

One of our Henley Nippers, Alana, is bravely facing her own battle with leukaemia, but she's also determined to help other kids going through a similar journey.

On Saturday 31 October at 11 am, Alana is walking from Grange Jetty to Henley Beach Jetty to raise money for the Childhood Cancer Association.

Her goal is to raise $4,500 to help provide Elliot puppies – special cuddly companions that bring comfort to children going through cancer treatment. Every $40 raised can provide an Elliot puppy to a child who needs one.

We're inviting all our members, their families, and the wider Henley and Grange community to join Alana on the walk and support her fundraiser! Let's get a great crowd together and show Alana that her community is behind her. 💙

🎂 HAPPY 101st BIRTHDAY, HENLEY!

On 1 October 1925, 68 people gathered in the Council Chamber to form what would become South Australia’s first surf life saving club.

Among the business that night was a pretty important decision: a motion was carried that the new club be called “Henley Life Saving Club.” And just like that, our story began.

Those handwritten minutes give us a wonderful glimpse into Henley’s earliest days - electing office bearers, setting membership fees and deciding on some rather fabulous awards.

There was an xylonite brush, comb and mirror set for the “lady securing the highest number of points during the season”, a gold medal for the “first boy under 16 years gaining highest points in Award of Merit”, and another gold medal for the “best behaved boy during season.” Times have certainly changed!

101 years later, plenty has changed, but the heart of Henley is remarkably familiar: people volunteering their time, looking out for one another and keeping our beach safe.

For more than a century, Henley SLSC has served its community - and our community, in turn, has supported the club. Generations of members, families, friends, local businesses and supporters have all helped make Henley what it is today.

Here’s to everyone who has been part of those 101 years - and to the generations still to come.

❤️💛 What a wonderful piece of South Australian surf lifesaving history from our neighbours at Grange Surf Life Saving Club.

It’s hard to believe it has only been 46 years since women were first able to gain their Bronze Medallion and become active patrolling members. Those first women helped change surf lifesaving forever, paving the way for generations of women to patrol, compete, coach, train, volunteer and lead across our clubs today.

We’re proud that Henley’s own Cherie Hutton was among those pioneering women - one of many across South Australia who stepped forward and helped shape the movement we know today.

Thank you to Grange for sharing Tracy’s story, and to Tracy, Cherie, Julie, Helen, Judy and Nareeda and all those trailblazing women. What a legacy. ❤️💛

Long time member Tracy Pel remembers -
“I grew up watching my older brothers patrolling and competing for Grange – it frustrated me immensely watching them have so much fun. In 1980, females were finally allowed to join the surf lifesaving movement! I signed up for the first female Bronze squad as I was now 17, much to my Dad's disgust. He thought it wasn't very ladylike! Also in the first female bronze squad was Julie Zani, Helen Parham, Judy Dennison and Nareeda Martin. Nareeda had to drop out half way through as she caught glandular fever but went on to do her bronze in the 2nd female group. Robert Davis (Poco) was our instructor. The guys made it very tough for us back then, as not many agreed with females joining. In our exam the examiners were very strict and our belt swim was way out past the end of the jetty. Yes, we did the belt swim which has now been abolished. We all passed with flying colours.
It is so good to see so many females in the movement today and I am proud to say I was one of the first ones.”

Today, women are an integral part of our Club - patrolling our beaches, competing, coaching, training, leading, volunteering and helping shape the future of Grange SLSC. ❤️
To every woman who has worn the red and yellow, earned her Bronze, stood on patrol, stepped into leadership, or given her time to our Club - thank you. Your contribution has made, and continues to make, a lasting difference.

Help more children feel included, supported and confident at Nippers! 💛❤️

Surf Life Saving SA is partnering with the Claire Elizabeth Foundation and Purple Orange to support all our clubs to deliver an Adaptive Nippers program. This support includes offering FREE Disability & Inclusion training to our volunteers!

These sessions will help volunteers build the knowledge, skills and confidence to support children with disability or additional support needs in Nippers 🙌
