Kapunda Golf Club Weekly Report
As you are probably aware the greens were cored last Monday. Judging by the scores since, you would think that either players enjoy the slower pace or the volunteers have done such a great job on getting them playable that there have been no ill effects of the renovations at all! Maybe the perfect weather conditions also played a part.
The ladies had a bit of a day off with a lazy nine hole ambrose comp followed by their “winter” presentations before tucking into a beautiful pooled lunch. Marie, Judy and Carolyn (3 due to the odd number) were the winners of the ambrose comp with a net score of 25.
The Captain’s trophy (played best 3 of 5 rounds of stroke) was a close affair with Carolyn Koch winning with a score of 292, closely followed by Helen Day on 295. The nett winners were reversed with Helen winning by the solitary stroke, 221 to 222.
The Summer Cup (best 3 of 5 stableford rounds) winners were Helen again with 110 points ahead of Marg Browne on 105.
The summer eclectic was winner was Jan Owen on 59 gross while Carolyn was the winter winner with 55 gross.
There were 5 winners of the summer “gobblers” and they were Pam May, Carolyn, Marie Vater, Carol Molloy and Karen Farmer.
The summer birdies winners were Jodi Hayward and Karen.
Kazza has put her name up to again be the ladies Captain for the coming season.
This week was the annual bus trip and I am looking forward to some hot gossip from the day out.
Thursday turned out to be a pretty good day so not too sure why the field was only a small one of 38 players. It may have been smaller than normal but it was certainly a quality field. Nearly half the field played to their handicaps. Gubby Glenn had the best score of the day with an impressive 78/66 to win the A grade. Equally impressive were the B and C grade winners as well. Alex Nicholson carded a 82/68 in the B grade and Fatty Allen broke 90 for the first time at Royal Kapunda for an 88/67 in the C grade.
Sal Hambour had another great round of 78/67 and Hilly a nett 69. Hahny and Alan Jenner were playing in the same group and both came in with nett 70’s. Ian Dickie, Boris and Terry Harris were just a shot back and a further 7 players carded a net 72. Shane Pato also played to his handicap.
Craig Palmer picked up the NTP on the 6th, Ian on the 15th and Alan on the 18th. Alex Nicholson won the count back for the best front nine with 22 points and John Dickie recovered from an horrendous front nine to come in with a 39 on the back nine to win himself a ball.
One has to feel for Matty Cotton who, if you could drop a couple of holes, would have had a fantastic round himself. The 5th/14th did him no favours at all. Not often you see two different penalties on one hole but he managed it on the 5th. After putting his drive into the edge of the water he skun his third into the retaining wall which spat it out onto Kidman Road. He also found the water the second time around to card a total of 17 shots for the two holes! Enough to drive anyone to drink.
I’m not sure what was in the water on Saturday for the Ian McMillan sponsored stableford round but we should have had sports integrity on hand to ask for a few samples after seeing some of the scores handed in. I can’t remember when there were two players under par and another just one over the card and a situation where 46 points didn’t even win a grade, all in the same round!
I would be pretty confident Courtney Ribbons hadn’t broken 90 at Kapunda before but she smashed it with 86 off the stick and an amazing 49 stableford points to claim the overall win. Well done Courtney, say goodbye to that 27 handicap 😄.
I would also put my house on both Pratty and Mingy not having come in under par in a round previously. Both carded 72 off the stick for 46 points. The very close countback came down to the final six holes and it was Pratty who prevailed on Saturday. Mingy had to settle for second place in the A grade. Griggy would have been in the mix had he not found trouble on the 8th to scuttle his chances. He still finished with 40 points and 3rd spot.
Jaiden Rosling started with two double bogeys in his first three holes but recovered well to card 41 points to claim the B grade win. A three-way countback was required to decide the remaining podium spots with Tim Crawford and Adrian Harris tipping out Mick O’Brien. All three had good scores of 39 points.
In the C grade Catfish turned the clock way back to break 90 and amass 43 points for the win ahead of a couple of fillies. Linda Boyd had a great round for 41 points and Sue Siviour came in third with 38.
Strachny, Doc and Russ Minnett also carded 38 points. A further nine players carded 37 points for a minor prize and a further nine played to their handicaps with no reward.
Doc’s day could have been over early after he eagled the first but he managed to hold it together for the round.
The Prince of Wales NTP prizes went to O’s on the 6th and Trev Day on the 15th. Strachny collected the Clare Castle prize on the 18th and Brian Stanley the Reilly’s w**e. Greg Jones also won the NTP 3rd shot for the C grade.
Doc Carson won the A grade long drive, Bully Higgins the B grade, Michael Siviour the C grade and Courtney was the best of the girls.
Dan Law hasn’t played at all during the footy season but came out first game back to be just one over the card. Who needs to practice?
A couple of second round match play games were decided with Sue Siviour making the most of her 25 shot advantage to sneak home over Graham Rigney 3@2.
Hahny and Pegs had a close match all day with Hahny winning 3 of the first 4 holes and maintaining a slight advantage until losing the 17th hole to make it one up with one to play. Both players pulled their tee shots on the 2nd into the trees but recovered well to be just off the green. Pegs left his chip six inches short of the hole for a tap in par. With no shots given, Hahny needed to drop his putt from the edge of the green to avoid playing extra holes. He knocked in the 20 footer with ease to finish one up in what was a great game of sportsmanship.
With an extra week of recovery in the greens it will be interesting to see if the impressive scores continue this week.
Thursday’s players will need to rise a bit earlier this week with the tee time brought forward to 8 o’clock for the first stableford game in October. Saturday will be a stroke round for the Total Earthworx Monthly Medal and you will be able to check out the impressive renovation of the 2nd tee block by Mark and his team.
