Perfect conditions at Aquatic Reserve set the scene for another highly successful Regional & non‑racing Clubs Training Day, proudly organised by Victor Dragons with support from DBSA.
With 55 participants from 8 clubs, the day delivered a full program of forward paddling technique, sweep instruction, and an entertaining on‑land capsize drill demonstration. The energy, enthusiasm, and teamwork on display made it clear why these training days remain so valuable for our regional clubs.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day run smoothly:
• Chris Wood – outstanding catering (the salads were a hit!) and organising the morning coffee van.
• Marie Cunningham – behind-the-scenes admin, registrations and keeping the coordinators updated throughout.
• Bill Parousis & Mike Lowe – manning the BBQ and keeping everyone well fed.
• Peter Button – assisting all day and capturing great on-water photos.
• Morag Craig & the Victor Dragons helpers – preparing lunch and handling the clean-up.
• Melisa Daly & Julie Lister – offering coaching/sweep support even though they couldn’t attend.
• Pat Doogue & Jason Kuhlmann – leading the sweeping program with both on-land and on-water instruction.
• Julie Davies – assisting with on-land paddle technique coaching and supervising in the boats.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we achieved our key goals: improving forward paddling technique, giving newer sweeps experience in a different environment, and supporting Level 2 Sweep assessments. A couple of extra L2 items were planned but time got away from us — something to build on next time.
The day wrapped up with a relaxed BBQ lunch, giving paddlers and sweeps the chance to mix, mingle and talk all things dragon boating. A fantastic community day from start to finish.
