Attention: Adelaide City Beach Community 👀

Beach Volleyball is coming back to the heart of Adelaide! 😍

Last night, 14 October 2025, the City of Adelaide Council formally approved Volleyball South Australia’s proposal to establish a new beach volleyball venue at Bonython Park — marking a major milestone in bringing the sport’s city-based home back to life.

The new Bonython Park site will replace the much-loved Adelaide City Beach, which was closed in 2022 after more than 20 successful years of competition, community, and connection in the Adelaide CBD.

The Council’s approval represents a significant step forward, with the final stage now focused on securing funding from the South Australian Government, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing - Rhiannon Pearce MP, to make the project a reality.

We would like to thank the City of Adelaide Council and Administration team for their continuous support!

Update!

After the closure of the much-loved Adelaide City Beach venue in April 2022, Volleyball South Australia have been working hard behind the scenes to create a new multi-use, sports and activity hub at Bonython Park/Tulya Wardli.

Turning this area into an open, inclusive space will enable the us to capture the beautiful natural habitat of the Parklands and provide a safe area for the community to activate.

The cost of the site is currently sitting at around $6-$7million however we are doing what we can to keep costs down while not compromising health and safety, environmental sustainability and security.

The masterplan also includes parking, a cafe, mezzanine bar, changeroom and toilet facilities!

Adelaide City Beach Stories 📖🥰

Fun In Every Season:

"I remember watching my Dad play indoor volleyball while I did homework on the sidelines. So it's not surprising that when I wanted to take up a sport myself, I researched where to play volleyball. Fortunately, I discovered the affordable training sessions at Adelaide City Beach (ACB). At my very first session, I met three great girls - one from Germany, one from Fiji, and one from Russia. We were encouraged to form a team together to play social games, and I'm so glad we did!

It didn't take long for my husband and another great girl from Fiji to join the team. Over the years, our team evolved and we played with many of our friends and family (even my Dad!). Later on, we also played with a few of my husband's mates from Uni, which was made easier because it was only a short walk from the campus to the courts. I'll never forget the game where we were being cheered on by one of our injured players and we all got absolutely drenched with rain but we finally won a set in A grade!

Throughout the years, Net Ninjas has earned a handful of medals but it's never been all about winning for us. Beach volleyball has been significantly beneficial for my mental health. Anxiety, stress, and even COVID worries seem to melt away when I'm playing at the ACB venue. It is such an uplifting and relaxing place with great music, happy vibes, and cheerful people. All the staff and other teams are super friendly and will often help each other out if one team is missing a player.

Last year, my husband and I took a little break to focus on having a family. But I couldn't stay away! So, this year I came back to play as a fill-in with some of the other awesome people I've met through ACB over the years.

I feel so sad that we are all going to split up to go to different venues after ACB closes. I'll miss these courts but I'll keep all their great memories and be forever grateful for the fun I've had there. I hope Beach Volleyball is back in the city somewhere, somehow, very soon!!"

ADELAIDE CITY BEACH 😍

With the recent announcement of the closure of our much-loved venue, we feel it's important to focus on all the amazing things that City Beach has offered to South Australian's.

We've received so many supportive messages since the announcement, and this one really hit us in the feels 🥰

Introducing Bethany, a loyal and long-standing Adelaide City Beach participant:
"What a way to wrap up my years playing at City Beach. I started playing around 8-10 years ago with a lunchtime corporate team. The team was, in a word, atrocious. None of us could play.

From there teams chopped and changed; training was added to lunchtimes; evening games were played; then we finally graduated to playing two a side; and inadvertently added an Olympian as a coach thanks to Covid.

City Beach has been a saving grace in my life. I went through some pretty challenging times over the years and it was often only volleyball that would get me out of bed for the day. It helped me find confidence, determination, and friendship.

I’m devastated to see it go but I’m hopeful that we’ll see it rise again in a new facility that can help the sport grow and be accessible to so many more.

Here’s hoping for another season (or two) at the current location but if not, at least we took out tonight’s A-Grade Grand Final."
