The time-honoured Camden Classic carnival will be held this Sunday the 2nd of February at the picturesque Camden Oval with the feature race of the carnival being the Women’s Camden Classic 400m event. First run in 1989 the race is always a highlight of the Pro Running Calendar in South Australia and the 37th iteration of the event this year is no different. Packed with some of the nations most talented junior athletes, in addition to some of our sports most experienced senior athletes this year’s version of the event will be some of the most exciting athletics viewing we will see all year. Get your viewing position along the home straight and watch these fabulous women fly around the track.

The honour roll of winners of this event includes some of the greats of our sport Ruth Taylor (1992), Vi Tompson (1995), Mandy Heath (1996), Kate Fenech (2001), Lee Myatt (2003), Pirrenee Steinert (2006), Czenya Cavouras (2017 & 18) and Kayla Lemm (2020) all unbelievably talented athletes in their own right and highlights the standing that the South Australian Athletics Community holds this event in. The twenty-seven women toeing the start line in this year’s iteration will all be desperate to add their name to the ever-growing winners list.

Headlining the field is the state’s top 400m athlete, elite junior and last year’s World Junior Championships representative in Lima, Peru, Charlotte McAuliffe. The Nik Hagicostas trained Charlotte is having her first start in a Camden Classic Women’s 400m and with PBs of 12.05 (100m), 24.05 (200m) and 53.43 (400m) will fly around the Camden Oval track. It is an honour to have someone of Charlotte’s class running with the league and fresh off running at the ACT Championships last weekend, will be hoping to use this race to kick start her domestic season. A former Camden Classic 400m U/18 Girls winner (2021) and Burnside 120m Women’s Gift winner and Bay Sheffield Semi-Finalist this season, Charlotte has the pedigree and performances on the board to give this race a significant shake.

2023 Camden Classic winner Victoria Cholsh (coached by Simon Moran) laces up the spikes in this year classic hoping to repeat her past feats. The states top 800m athlete, Victoria, with PBs of 58.9 (400m), 2:07.8 (800m) and 4:29.3 (1500m) is as talented as they come and although has only competed with the league sparingly this season (ran at both Flinders & the Keith Patching meet), did run a lightning quick 800m at the Victorian Milers Club meet before Christmas to show she is in form. Being an 800/1500m will have strength late and if she can make a final will be able to back up better than most. Its great to see someone of Victoria’s class toe the line and support the league in this event.

Talented junior Georgie Fielder adds significant class to the event. One of the states most talented junior female footballers (already a U/16 All-Australian, in addition to having already played league football for Glenelg) and a multi-event and hurdles junior star, Georgie credentials are undeniable. Georgie, with PBs of 12.70 (100m), 25.23 (200m) & 59.89 (400m) has speed and strength to burn and being a finalist in the Camden Classic previously knows what to expect in terms of race expectations but more importantly how to back up from heat to final. One of the most naturally gifted runners you will see at the track all day, make sure you pay attention to watching her burn around the track.

Back for her first race at the Camden Classic since 2020, Melarn Murphy adds that extra touch of class to an already stacked event. With track PBs of 12.11 (100m), 24.58 (200m) & 58.57 (400m), Melarn, the daughter of the great Tania Van Heer, has speed to match any athlete in the field. The former Keith Patching 400m winner and a finalist over the distance at Maryborough on New Years Day, Melarn, will be super confident coming into this event. Has the tactical nous of few in this field and you combine that with the speed and strength she possesses and watch out.

The Michael Nitschke trained Emma Henkel, a winner at the distance earlier this season at the Keith Patching carnival, will be hoping to add her name to the long list of winners to have taken out this classic event prior to heading off to college next season. Bound for Michigan State University mid-year, Emma, with PBs of 56.89 (400m), 2:09.1 (800m) and 4:29.1 (1500m) is one of the most credentialed junior athletes we have had come out of South Australia in recent memory. A silver and bronze medallist in the 1500m and 800m respectively at the National All-Schools Championships in Brisbane back in December, Emma, who also ran an eye-catching 2nd in the Bay Sheffield 800m Women’s event is fast, fit and determined to make potentially one of her last runs with the league for some time a successful one.

2023 Camden Classic U/18 Girls winner and fresh of an eye-catching fourth at last week’s Reynella 400m, Tigerlily Kovacic comes into this race in the form of her life. Still a junior athlete, Tigerlily week after week competes and holds her own again the leagues and our states top middle distance athletes. Tigerlily’s consistency, speed and strength is extraordinary for someone her age and will take some beating in this event. Competing at her home event the familiarity with the track will play a big part and the local Camden supporters will be cheering her on from a long way out.

Other athletes of note include Team Tempo’s defending champion Molly Cook & the classy Jessica McManus, GTS’s Ava Griffin, Coastel’s athlete Brooke Hayball, the Nik Hagicostas trained Ella Byrne fresh off an impressive victory over the distance at last week’s Reynella meeting, YGTS athlete Alex Day and former winner (2019) Lauren McHugh.

Of the 400m Women’s races run this year Ellie Whittingham (Crystal Brook), Emma Henkel (Keith Patching) & Ella Byrne (Reynella) have been victorious, with both Emma & Ella hoping to make it two wins for the season over the distance.
Other athletes to watch who have made a final over the distance this year and are nominated include dual Bay Sheffield sash winner this season Ali Trewartha, Rosie Williamson, the ever-consistent Amie Gross, 3-time sash winner this season Mercedes Tierney & GTS athlete Rachael Kean.

All the action kicks off at 12 noon.

The Under 18 Boys Camden Classic 400m event is a look into the future of our great sport. With talent littered throughout this year’s iteration, the racing will be fast, ferocious and super competitive the whole way around the track. This race packed with some of the nations most talented junior athletes, combined with some of the state best locals, will be some of the most exciting athletics viewing we will see all year.

Recent winners of this event includes some of the top 400m athletes we’ve seen over the last few years in Matt Learhinan (2017), Joseph McKinnon (2018), Anthony De Ruvo (2019), Xavier Poole (2020 & 21), Henry McKinnon (2022), Max Disbury (2023) and Isaac Marschall (2024) all unbelievably talented athletes in their own right and highlights the standing that the South Australian Athletics Community holds this event in. The twenty boys toeing the start line in this year’s iteration will all be desperate to add their name to the ever-growing winners list.
The event is headlined by the form junior athlete with the league in Joel Cedric Ebomo Zoalang. With PBs of 11.27 (100m) & 22.75 (200m) Joel’s class is undeniable. A winner this season 120m U/18 Boys at Mort Daly (off a tight handicap of 2.75), 120m U/18 Boys Maryborough & 300m U/18 Boys (Marion), Joel is rarely beaten. Is as competitive and consistent as they come and being a former winner of the 100m U/18 Boys at last years Stawell Gift knows what its like to compete in and win big feature races. Majority of form has been over the shorter distances but with his speed and tactical nous can never be underestimated. A great athlete.
The talented Austin Botha, a new athlete to the league this season will be having his first start over the distance at Camden. A winner at his first start with the league back at Port Adelaide (300m Novice) earlier in the year, Austin has proven to be a hit with the league this season. Made the 120m U/18 Boys final at Reynella in addition to finishing 3rd in the 120m Novice Final showing he has come off the Christmas break in form. Has shown his ability in the three carnivals he has run with the league to date and form suggests he will be competitive for a long way.

Another new athlete to the league this season and exciting beach sprinter in Jackson Camilleri will be having his first start over the distance with the league this week. A finalist in the Mort Daly 120m U/18 Boys event a fortnight ago highlights the form he is starting to work into. Has competed primarily over 70m & 120m this season Jackson will be hoping the strength that he has shown in these races hold him in good stead for this weeks race.

Another new athlete to the league Jay McTavish will be hoping his first run over the distance with the league is a success. Ran a super quick 51.48 (400m) back in December and if runs similar to this over the distance will be super competitive. Made finals in his first runs with the league at Mort Daly (70m Novice and 120m U/18 Boys) a fortnight back and looked electric running down the track. Can run and run fast, excited to see him run here.

Defending Champion and a finalist over the last two iterations of the event Isaac Marschall will be hoping to make it back to back wins in this years version of the event. A perennial finalist with the league Isaac’s Pro-Running credentials are as good as any in his age group. Is fast, consistent and phenomenal competitor. Will give you a sight.

The classy Paul Young trained Lewis Day will also be looking to put his best foot forward after a great start to the year with the league. A multiple winner with the league this season already 120m U/18 Boys at Reynella and the 400m U/18 Boys at Crystal Brook, Lewis is gifted, gutsy and as a determined runner as any junior that we’ll see run at the carnival. Has made the past two U/18 Boys 400m

01/02/2025

The age-old Camden Classic carnival will be held tomorrow the 2nd of February at the picturesque Camden Oval with the feature race of the carnival being the Men’s Camden Classic 400m event. First run and won by Brian Witty in 1980 the race is the premier middle-distance event of the Pro Running Calendar in South Australia and the 46th iteration of the event this year looks on paper to have attracted the strongest field in years. Packed with sprinters stepping up in distance and some of the state’s best middle-distance guys stepping down in distance the one lap affair promises to be some of the most exciting athletics viewing we will see all year. Strap yourself in, these men will be tearing up the track and the fireworks we will see around the lap of Camden Oval will be worth the price of admission alone.

The honour roll of winners of this event includes some of the greats of our sport Frank McHugh (1983), Steve Hutton (1990 & 96), Tom Hassell (1994), Craig Fountain (1997), Duncan Tippins (perhaps the best run ever seen at Camden 46.68 off 9 metres) (2008), Matthew Hargreaves (VIC) (2009), James Boden (2010), Clay Watkins (2015) and Harry May (2019) all unbelievably talented athletes in their own right and highlights the standing that the South Australian Athletics Community holds this event in. The thirty-one men toeing the start line in this year’s iteration will all be desperate to add their name to the ever-growing winners list.

Headlining the field is one the state’s top 400m athletes in Blake Jones. The Paul Young trained Blake is having his 2nd start in a Camden Classic Men’s 400m (1st raced back in 2022 where he was 5th in his heat), A bronze medallist over the distance at last year’s State Championships, Blake, with PBs of 21.91 (200m) and 48.07 (400m) will fly around the Camden Oval track. Ran his first 400m of the season at last week’s Reynella Gift Carnival and was able to win his heat before going on to finish eighth in the final. A former Bay Sheffield 70m winner (2022), Camden Classic 120m winner (2022) and Crystal Brook 120m winner (2024), Blake, knows how to win, has form at the track and he will be hoping the fitness gains he achieved from his runs at Reynella hold him in good stead for this race.

One of/if not the states most elite and consistent 400m athlete of the past decade in Ryan Atkins will be hoping its fourth time a charm when he competes in this classic event. A 3-time finalist in the Camden Classic, 2024 (5th), 2020 (7th), 2019 (6th), Ryan, is in the form of his life after running slick times of 21.64 (200m) & 47.77 (400m) at last weekend’s ACT State Championships. Ryan, with PBs of 21.47 (200m) & 47.76 (400m) and a Bay Sheffield Winner (2016) is getting better with age and experience and it is an honour that he’s decided to use the Camden Classic and a building block towards the rest of his domestic season. Likes the track and conditions as evidenced by the fact he has won three sashes at the hallowed turf, Camden Classic 120m (2017), Camden Classic 400m U/17 (2014) & Camden Classic 120m U/14 (2011). Get down and watch Ryan run, you will not be disappointed.

The Simon Moran coached Toby Cook will also lace up the spikes in this classic hoping to add his name to the winners list. One of the state’s best middle-distance runners with PBs of 49.49 (400m) and 1:51.55 (800m), Toby, ran a lightning quick 1:52.36 over 800m at the ACT State Championships last week to show the form and fitness he is in. A finalist over the distance at the Keith Patching Carnival (finished 3rd) in November and a 3rd in the 550m at Mort Daly earlier this month should hold him in good stead to be competitive in this field.

Former Bay Sheffield finalist (2nd in 2023) and 48.44 (400m) man Thomas McClure will be stepping out over the full lap distance for the 1st time with the league. The talented Thomas, with PBs of 10.80 (100m), 21.26 (200m) & 48.44 (400m), has speed to burn, an abundance of strength and grit and determination to match anyone in the field. Has competed sparingly with the league this season (his only start being over 120m at the Marion Gift), with his attention being on the track. Did run a solid 21.73 (200m) and 50.03 (400m) in November as season openers. Knows how to run and compete in big events as evidenced by his Bay Sheffield record and will be strong over the 400m distance.

7-time Camden Classic finalist Hayden Rothe will be hoping its lucky number 8 when he toes the start line at this year’s Classic and he can finally break his hoodoo in this event. The greatest to have never won a Classic that means so much to him and his Camden family, the Frank McHugh coached Camden Athlete, Hayden, with finishes of 2024 (2nd), 2023 (4th), 2022 (2nd), 2019 (3rd), 2018 (2nd), 2017 (6th), 2016 (9th) is arguably the most ultra-competitive and ultra-consistent athletes that we have competing with the league on a regular basis. Hayden, a former Stawell Gift 550m winner, scratched from the 400m at Reynella and although not having competed at the distance this year will go in super confident. Has competed over the 70m & 120m this season and was a Semi-Finalist over the gift distance at the recent Bay Sheffield. Is as gutsy as they come and will be hard to beat.

Former Melbourne Victory player and form sprinter of the league Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio is running the 400m distance again this week after the excitement he showed having his first start over the distance at Reynella last week. Winning his heat and finishing 3rd in the final show just how far this athlete has come. Has won three sashes out of his last four starts with the league (70 & 120m at Mort Daly and 120m at Reynella) this athlete is quality and just keeps lifting his level. Luis is fit, fast and strong and the excitement he is bringing to the track in palpable. Cannot wait to see him run the 400m distance again this week. Won the 120m U/18 Boys race at Camden back in 2018 highlighting his form at the track, make sure you watch this guy run.

Other athletes of note include 2023 Camden Classic Winner Maxwell Underwood, elite junior and the Simon Moran coached Thomas Kemp (1:53 800m PB), star junior hurdler and the Gabby Phillis trained Max Thompson, YGTS athlete Hayden Crowe, Michael Hane trained athletes Degras Amakata (1:49 800m PB) & Deacon Gore & Victorian Jack Doderico.

Of the 400m Men’s races run this year the Ian Burge trained Sam Kean has won all 3 (Crystal Brook, Keith Patching & Reynella) in the middle of being on a heater (6 sashes already this season over a variety of distances). A class athlete who runs on guts and determination Sam will give it his all in the hope of making it four from 4 and 7 sashes for the season.

Other athletes to watch who have made a final over the distance this year and are nominated include Bay Sheffield 550m Winner and Maryborough 400m winner on New Years Day Ben Wilson, Tyler Ford, Benjamin Driver, YGTS athlete Luke Rigby, Hayden Petherick (Deb Meich), , the Rick Trelevan trained Cameron Konnis & Camden Athletes Matthew Cousins, Lochie O’Brien, Luke Bero, Xavier Poole, Michael Hayes & Rory White.

It's the Camden Classic weekend and we are all set for a great Sunday of racing kicking off at 12 noon Sunday.

The Under 18 Girls Camden Classic 400m event is a look into the future of our great sport. With talent littered throughout this year’s iteration, the racing will be fast, ferocious and super competitive the whole way around the track. This race packed with some of the nations most talented junior athletes, combined with some of the state best locals, will be some of the most exciting athletics viewing we will see all year.

Recent winners of this event includes some of the top 400m athletes we’ve seen over the last few years in Lara Chehade (2017), Piper Window (2018), Taya Howden (2019), Sienna Aldridge (2020), Charlotte McAuliffe (2021), Matilda Caven (2022), Tigerlily Kovacic (2023) and Elsie Parsons (2024) all unbelievably talented athletes in their own right and highlights the standing that the South Australian Athletics Community holds this event in. The sixteen girls toeing the start line in this year’s iteration will all be desperate to add their name to the ever-growing winners list.

The event is headlined by exciting 15-year-old junior beach sprinting star from the Glenelg Surf Club and Camden athlete Elsie Parsons. A phenomenon with the league, Elise sits atop the list of exciting junior athletes who will be attempting to add their name to the Camden Classic U/18 honour role. A two-time, back-to-back Australian Gold Medallist in the beach sprint and the 2024 U/18 120 Junior Bay Sheffield winner, Elsie’s resume for someone so young is unmatched. A winner of five sashes in her short time with the league, Elsie, last year’s Camden Classic 400m U/18 Girls winner and with a 400m PB of 57.45, can run, and run fast. Frank McHugh’s strong Camden stable has a strong hand in this year’s iteration of the event and Elsie sits atop of that list.

One of the best juniors we have in the country at present over the 400m, Iluka-Rose Taylor, also laces up the spikes in this week’s Camden 400m U/18 Girls event. A prodigious talent, the Nik Hagicostas trained Iluka-Rose, with slick PBs on the track of 12.40 (100m), 24.74 (200m) & 55.50 (400m) is a fast as they come. Iluka-Rose has been very good, and very good for a long time often competing against and beating competitors significantly older than her. Elite at whatever she turns her hand to, its great for the league to see someone of Iluka’s quality decide to compete with the league. Don’t miss watching this girls run.

Tough junior athlete Georgie Fielder, fresh off finishing fifth in the 550m Women’s final at the recent Bay Sheffield Carnival adds significant class to the event. One of the states most exciting multi-sport athletes, Georgie, is a racer and has speed and strength to burn. Georgie, with PBs of 12.70 (100m), 25.23 (200m) & 59.89 (400m) and already a finalist at the Open Women’s Camden Classic (2023 5th in the Final) at such a tender age knows what to expect in terms of race expectations but more importantly how to back up from heat to final. Will be hard to beat and competitive for a long way.

Grange Track Squad athlete Beth Griffin, still on a high from and fresh off winning the 800m Women’s race at last weeks Reynella Carnival in addition to the 550m U/18 Girls Final at the recent Bay Sheffield Carnival comes into this race as one of the form athletes of the league. An exceptional junior who has achieved so much as an athlete at such a tender age, Beth, generally competes over the longer distances of 800m/1500m. With PBs of 59.11 (400m), 2:18 (800m) & 4:48 (1500m) this girl can run. Continuing to improve, Beth’s ceiling is high. A previous finalist in this event back in 2022 (finishing 5th) Beth will be hoping her hot run of form continues in this event.

Maddy Humphry, another one of our elite junior middle-distance athletes in the state will be testing herself out against the senior women over the one lap event. Fresh off solid performance up in Brisbane at the National All Schools (competed over the 800m & 1500m), Maddy, a flinders athlete, stepping down in distance will be a great watch. Ran a very solid 2:31 (800m) at Interclub last weekend, back up after two solids runs over the 400m & 800m at Reynella the night before. Relatively new to the sport of pro-running Maddy will be hoping her consistent racing and 800m strength hold up here.

The Gary Thompson trained Reynella athlete Emma Potter, a winner over the distance already this year (Crystal Brook) will be hoping her strong form over the distance continues this weekend. Finishing a close 2nd in last years iteration of the event, Emma, more known for her exploits over 800m will have strength in the back end of her race that few will be able to match. Emma, also a talented soccer player is another one of our sports multi-talented athletes looking to add their name to the honour roll of this great event.

Other athletes of note include Anya Horgan, Talulah Kovacic, Madiha Aaliyah Zoalang Mouri-Flourent & Alexa Misaildis.
Of the 400m U/18’s races run this year Emma Potter (Crystal Brook) & Anya Horgan (Keith Patching) have been victorious, with both Emma & Anya hoping to make it two wins for the season over the distance.

Other athletes to watch who have made a final over the distance this year and are nominated include Tully Allen, Talulah Kovacic, Alexa Misailidis, Zoe Flesfader & Scarlett Poole.
