We are deeply saddened by the passing of Nadine Ferguson, a much-loved Life Member and a true pillar of our fencing community.
Nadine’s fencing journey began at just eight years old at the Northern Districts Fencing Club. Her grandfather, John Richards, helped nurture her early love of the sport with footwork sessions and training, while her dad, Rob, coached her at competitions and drove her to and from training. Those long trips included memorable stops at their favourite deli for a Killer Python or King Rat—a small but treasured part of her fencing story.
Over the years, Nadine trained with coaches Jim Fazekas, John Bacon and Leon Thomas. She represented South Australia as a Junior, Senior and Veteran, and Australia as a Veteran. After taking a short break when her children, Clayton and Christian, were born, she returned to fencing with the same passion and determination.
At Charles Sturt Fencing Club, Nadine gave so much of herself—as a competitor, coach, referee, mentor and administrator. She helped run school holiday programs, taught beginner classes and was always ready to lend a hand at competitions, often without being asked. Her generosity and commitment helped strengthen our club and inspire those around her.
Nadine will be remembered for her kindness, strength, intelligence and mental toughness, as well as her unwavering determination and care for the fencing community. Her impact on our sport—and on the many people fortunate enough to know her—will continue to be felt.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Darren, Clayton, Christian and her family and to all who loved her.
Thank you, Nadine, for everything you gave to fencing in South Australia and beyond. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
