Vale Gary Grierson

For many decades, Melbourne City Badminton participated in Central Badminton Association competitions season after season. In recent years (2004-2021), Gary was synonymous with Central’s weekly competitions as Central’s Match Secretary. He faithfully ran and attended match evenings at MSAC even in his last few years when he required a mobility walker.

As an affiliate club of Central Badminton Association and fellow Central Badminton committee, Melbourne City Badminton had many interactions with Gary and enjoyed hearty conversations over a good red after every committee meeting! We thank Gary for his dedication to Central Badminton Association, for his tireless role as Central Match Secretary and for his immense contribution to the wider badminton community. He was a role model of what the spirit of true volunteerism is.

Vale Gary Grierson.
It is with sadness that Central Badminton Association share the news of the passing of Gary Grierson on Wednesday 23 July 2025 in Rutherglen.

Gary was a meticulous administrator in all his badminton commitments and a great friend to all who knew him.

Brief history: Gary commenced playing badminton with Christchurch Hawthorn Badminton Club in the 1970s and eventually became their club representative to Central Badminton Association meetings in the early 1980s.

Gary was elected to the Central Badminton Association Committee at the Central Badminton Association AGM in March 1994. Gary was a regular delegate to Badminton Victoria AGMs representing Central Badminton Association.

In 2004, he was elected Vice-President of Central Badminton Association as well as taking on the role as Central Match Secretary.

When Central Badminton Association hosted the Central Badminton City of Melbourne Tournament, Gary assisted with this until 2006 and upon becoming the Tournament Convenor from 2007-2012, the tournament became an Open & Graded event on the Badminton Victoria tournament calendar. He was pivotal in introducing the Para-Badminton division into Central City of Melbourne Open & Graded Tournament from 2012.

Gary was also a Treasurer and committee member of the Badminton Victoria Court Officials. He became a Level One Umpire and was the team umpire for the Victorian Demons at the 2012 June Bevan Carnival.

He was involved as a Line Judge at several major events including the Deafympics in 2005, the Commonwealth Games 2006 and the Thomas & Uber Cup Preliminaries in 2012.

Amongst his many other achievements, Gary was editor of the Central Badminton Association newsletter “Pivot”. Gary won the Central Badminton Des Watson Memorial trophy for club participation five times. He was also Treasurer of Albert Park Badminton and made a Life Member in 2004.

In 2013 Gary was honoured by Badminton Victoria with a Distinguished Service Award for his service to badminton.

Gary resigned from his duties at Central Badminton Association and other various committees in 2021 due to poor health.

Thank you Gary for your tremendous community service. You will be greatly missed.

Melbourne City Badminton has been approached by the Victorian State Govt to share information regarding a very important project with our international students community here at Melbourne-City Badminton and MISB-Melbourne International Students Badminton.

As former international students ourselves, we are well aware of the myriad of challenges international students navigate through during your experience of living and studying here in Victoria. We have been privy to the struggles many of you face and hope we have been a comforting sounding board to you and a useful referral source.

The Victorian Department of Health has engaged Impact Co. to support the International Student Journey Mapping Project. This project aims to create journey maps and personas of international students describing their experiences in Victoria, with a focus on their mental health and wellbeing.

The information and insights provided from these journey maps will be used to inform better ways to support the mental health and well-being of current and future international students and to reduce the rates of su***de among this group.

They are seeking participation from international students to better understand the needs of international students in relation to mental health and wellbeing support to further improve support services for international students during their time studying in Victoria. This project has been funded by the Victorian Department of Health.
