The people you didn’t know you needed

At first, you only know their belt color.

Then you learn their name.

Eventually, you know when they have had a rough day before they say a word.

You have held pads for them.
Lost your balance in front of them.
Laughed together at a mistake neither of you could explain.

Somewhere between the warm-ups and the conversations after class, a stranger becomes someone you are glad to see.

Adult friendship can be difficult to fit into a calendar.
The dojo gives you a place to keep meeting.

Something demanding to share.
A reason to pay attention to one another.

You come in wanting to improve your karate.

Then one evening you realize how much the people matter.

The technique brought you into the room.
The relationships became part of why the room matters.

Who made you feel that you belonged in your dojo?

Osu.

Last night I had the great pleasure of presenting our 2 new black belts with their interim belts. A journey of almost a decade for the 2 of them. Congratulations to Jenny and Tom. Well deserved and earned.
