I was recently interviewed by The Epoch Times following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack, where I shared my views on the radicalisation process and the challenges authorities face in predicting and preventing so-called “lone-wolf” attacks.
These individuals are often highly unpredictable, making early detection extremely difficult despite intelligence and policing efforts. In the article, I also discuss how Australia can better prepare for these types of incidents through improved public awareness, preparedness training, and faster on-scene response capabilities.
From a policy perspective, I outline practical measures governments could consider, including models used overseas. One example is the United Kingdom’s Armed Response Vehicle approach, where heavily armed police units patrol high-traffic and high-risk areas to provide immediate deterrence and rapid intervention should an attack occur.
The focus must remain on preparedness, deterrence, and protecting the public in an increasingly complex threat environment.
Stay safe, train often and always remain humble.

実戦型 (Jissen Gata): The Reality of Combat at Bujinkan Jissen Dojos
実戦型 — Jissen Gata, meaning “real combat form” — is the foundation of everything we teach at Bujinkan Jissen Dojos. Our mission is to prepare students for the unpredictable nature of real-world violence through practical, adaptable, and effective training. Every movement, strike, and defensive response must work under pressure — not just in theory or demonstration.
Unfortunately, many instructors today have drifted into teaching unrealistic techniques that may look impressive but fail under real conditions. A prime example is the practice of “catching a punch.” Against a slow, compliant partner, it might seem possible, even elegant. But in reality, when a punch is thrown with true speed, power, and intent, the odds of catching it cleanly are virtually zero. Attempting it will likely result in getting hit in the face — or breaking your fingers. These theatrical techniques give students a dangerous false sense of security.
At Bujinkan Jissen Dojos, we emphasise realism over illusion. Our training focuses on controlling distance, moving off the attack line, and using natural body mechanics to evade, counter, and neutralise threats. We incorporate scenario-based drills, controlled sparring, and stress-testing to ensure our students can respond instinctively when adrenaline surges.
Jissen Gata isn’t about perfection or showmanship — it’s about survival. It bridges the ancient warrior principles of the Bujinkan with the realities of modern violence. By training in Jissen Gata, our students develop not only technique but mindset — calm under pressure, adaptability, and true confidence in their ability to protect themselves and others.
At Bujinkan Jissen Dojos, we train for what is real — not what looks good on camera. That is the essence of 実戦型 (Jissen Gata).
