Todd (Runner 1️⃣8️⃣ - The Assist 🤝)
How far did you go?
24 loops
Previous longest run?
160km/100 miler
Why did you stop?
I was pushing through pain to reach my goal of 24 laps and when I got to it risking (further) injury didn’t seem worth it.
Turns out, running over 100kms in new shoes is not a great idea… and I’ve got the swollen foot to prove it. Here’s hoping I can get back to running in a few weeks.

It was so good I’d like to try for 48 laps!
But I think having a crew would be a big help!

Lachie (Runner 1️⃣3️⃣)
How far did you go?
15 loops
Previous longest run? 231km West Macs Monster - this was my first BYU
Why did you stop?
The mind was great but the body wasn't moving quick enough to get around the course in the 60mins. I had checkpoints to gauge timing around the course, first gate by 10min, triple gate by 25min, cattle grid by 43min and that'd get me in by 50min, which was average 7:30min/km pace. The second last loop I was 5 mins slower. The last loop the legs could only move so fast, I hit the gate at 14min, triple gate by 34min, and the cattle grid on the 60min mark. I felt reminiscent of Kath and Kim speed walking, the arms were moving but the legs weren't. Super stoked to go 15 loops considering the body has been through (pardon the pun) the ringer the last 6 weeks with a lower leg stress fracture and shoulder injury from footy.

Such a beautiful community event and a wonderful opportunity for people to tackle a new adventure and test themselves. Considering it is a relatively controlled environment and everything you need is at the start/finish line, being able to see the crowd and loved ones every hour, the aid station, ability to top up nutrition, change clothes if needed and have a yarn with everyone each hour is so different to a point to point endurance event, so it's a wonderful space for people to express their fitness and play around with nutrition and tactics. Even though there might be 60+ people on course, you can be as social or not as you like. You may run with people for parts of the loop, but often your pace or aim for the lap might be different and the field can spread out as the loops progress. Time off your feet in between loops is vital. Often you can spend 3-4mins filling up flasks, changing socks, applying sunscreen, prepping for a night loop and time goes quick.
