Altona Gators Basketball Club The Junior and Senior Championship program "Altona Gators" currently has Junior, Senior and Youth development teams with an opportunity to grow all programs.

Altona Gators is the representative basketball club for the Altona Bay Basketball Association, participating in Basketball Victoria State Competitions. Our program is designed to develop local domestic junior and senior players at the elite level. Formed in 1990 the Altona Bay Basketball Association (ABBA) moved into "The Swamp" at the Altona Sports Centre in 1992. The Association runs both Junior & Senior Domestic Competitions as well as Representative teams playing as the "Altona Gators".

2003 Altona re-entered the Senior Competition then known as VBL with 2 teams Senior Men’s and Women. Over the past five seasons the Gators have experienced considerable growth and success in both the Senior and Junior programs. In the past 6 Season our Senior Men have competed in 5 Finals series and a number of Junior Girls and Boys teams have won VJBL Championships. The Altona Sports Centre completed the building of 2 additional courts in 2008 taking the stadium to 6 courts, 2 courts with seating for approximately 300 +spectators.

2009 has been one of the Gators most successful years with 12 out of 23 teams making it to the final series, including the Men’s Youth League team in their inaugural year. Of these, 7 teams (6 Junior and 1 Senior team) made it to the Grand Finals, with 3 of the junior teams taking out the championships‐ the 14.3 Girls, 14.1 Boys and the U20 Boys and the Division 3 Women took out the premiership flag, the first time ever since joining the Big V competition. Building on the success of 2009 the Gators will field 23 teams in the 2010 season, including a new Women’s Youth League Team. Gators will now field four senior teams, including the promotion of the Division Three Women to Division One.

ALTONA GATORS MEN’S OPEN RUNS | 2027 SEASON 🐊

Our Youth League Men and Division One Men are preparing for 2027, and we are inviting players both existing or new to an Open Run. Both teams are looking forward to a successful season ahead.

In exciting news, Basketball Victoria has announced that Big V will become the Victorian Basketball League (VBL) in 2027, creating a clearer connection across Victoria’s basketball pathway and ensuring another wonderful season of basketball will occur in 2027.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM TRY OUTS!

Looking for the perfect introduction to representative basketball?

The Gators Development Program offers young players the opportunity to join the Gators family, train with experienced coaches and participate in tournaments throughout the year — without the full commitment of a representative team.

Players will train once a week on Sunday mornings and participate in 3–4 tournaments throughout the year, usually held across long weekends.

For players born in 2017, 2018 or 2019.

Inviting current and aspiring players to try out for the Altona Gators Representative Program for the 2026/27 VJBL Season.

Join our program that values long term athlete development, building confidence and community.

Important Information
✅ Registration is compulsory – unregistered players cannot trial.
✅ Arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled session.
✅ Bring a reversible light/dark singlet, basketball and drink bottle.
✅ Players are expected to attend all trial sessions to be eligible for selection.

Age Groups
• Under 12 – Born 2016–2018
• Under 14 – Born 2014–2015
• Under 16 – Born 2012–2013
• Under 18 – Born 2010–2011
• Under 20 – Born 2008–2009 (Trials held with Senior Try-Outs in late October)

Under 16 Boys
Phase 1 trials are for bottom-age current representative players and players new to representative basketball. All existing bottom age players and invited domestic players will attend Phase 2 trials.

All other age groups (current representative and new players) will attend all scheduled trial sessions.

VJBL Lead Coach Announcements!

We are proud to announce our Lead Coaches for the 2026/2027 VJBL Season.

Brett Leech – U12 Boys
Brett returns to lead our U12 Boys program after guiding U12.1 to VC and a finals run in 2026. His leadership will continue to provide a strong foundation for our boys program.

Liam Scott – U14 Boys
Liam returns as U14 Boys Head Coach after guiding another team to VC. He also brings Youth Championship Women’s coaching experience and a strong understanding of high-level player development.

Marvin Ganzon – U16 Boys
Marvin takes the reins of our U16 Boys program. With previous success taking an U12 team to a VC finals run and experience within Basketball Victoria pathways, he brings valuable knowledge to our players.

Daniel Gatt – U18 Boys
Daniel returns to lead our U18 Boys after several years of VC success with our U16 program. He also coaches within our Youth League Men’s program, helping prepare players for senior basketball.

Ian Hardham – U12 Girls
“Muffy” returns to lead our U12 Girls after an outstanding 2026 season, including a VC finals appearance and fifth-place finish at the National Junior Classic. His experience provides a strong foundation for our girls program.

Kate Coffey & Lisa Scalzo – U16 Girls
Kate and Lisa return to lead our U16 Girls. With more than a decade of experience developing Gators players together, they play a key role in connecting our junior and senior pathways and instilling confidence and belief in our players.

Randy Shanklin – U14 & U18 Girls
Our Director of Coaching and six-time Big V Coach of the Year returns to lead our U14 & U18 Girls. Randy brings extensive experience across VJBL, Basketball Victoria pathways and Big V, with a strong focus on long term player development and preparing players to be the best they can be.

We encourage all players to register and attend our upcoming VJBL trials. Whether you are an existing Gators player, returning to representative basketball or new to the club, we want to see you on the court.
