Tai Chi at a Glance:
Health , Well Being and Self Defense.
---Background---
Tai Chi is part of Chinese culture. The principles of Tai Chi was firstly laid by Chang San-feng 張三丰 (1367 -1403 A.D.)
who was a Taoist lived in Wu-tung mountain 武當山. His thoughts was based on Taoism 道家哲學. Major goals of Taoism is health and wellbeing.
---Health---
"Softness being the source of life". Tai Chi starts with softness. It relaxes the whole body, making it soft and flexible. It stretches and relaxes all joints of the whole body, and makes the mind become conscious and the blood circulation harmonized. Ultimately it maintains good health and enables long life.
The movement of Tai Chi keep the heart, lungs and all internal organs in a proper and comfortable condition. Tai Chi also trains chi to flow smoothly inside our body, resulting nourishment and oxygen are able to reach every part of our body, hence good health and mind can be achieved.
---Well Being---
For the above reasons, it does not only improve one's health, but also changes one's disposition. It is not surprising that after practicing over a period of time, a hot-tempered man will change into a gentleman. Another characteristic of Tai Chi is concentration on thought rather than strength. A Tai Chi practitioner will consider thoroughly daily problems with which he is confronted, and will be able to take immediate and appropriate actions.
Reluctance to emphasize strength means that thoughts should direct every action when practicing, so that every action is alert and skilful.
If one has a healthy body as well as a sound mind, he will handle problems with ease leading a happy life.
---Self Defense---
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art. The posture and movement are based on yang and ying philosophy. The art requires softness and smoothness, just like flowing water. 'For water is the most soft substance and which can penetrates hardest material such as rock', Bruce Lee said. Therefore, instead of using brutal force, Tai Chi as a self defense training emphasises on 'mindfulness as above'.
