Avalon Sailing Club is hosting the 2026 Australian Couta Boat Championships this weekend. A fleet of 16 Coutas, including a good number from Melbourne, will see over 100 sailors competing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It will be very busy and festive at the club over the weekend, so please be sure to come down and enjoy the regatta.

Unlike last week's soaking, the fleet set off under sunny skies in the forecast Sou'westerly, which gradually swung south east by the 2nd lap turning the race into a "soldier's course". Gen X led the fleet around the course whilst the others battled it out changing positions all the way to the finish. Alkina snuck in front of Pirihi right on the finish to cross 3rd behind Wimmera. The handicapper awarded the race to Pirihi, followed by Alkina & Wimmera. Alkina leading the series with Pirihi & GenX tied one point behind.

The forecast of 18 degrees, rain and 20Kts+ South was ominous. On a weekend where too much sport was barely enough (AFL & NRL Finals, Wallabies v Springboks, Socceroos vs Brazil) the Quartet Bowl lived up to expectations.

Most boats rode out peaks of 26Kts off West Head only to sail into a huge hole opposite Patonga and slow to a crawl. Visibility was very poor & fortunately the hole wasn't as bad on the return leg. The fleet gathered at the entrance to Pittwater for an epic battle to the finish in a stiff 15-20Kt Southerly.

Goldfinger lead the fleet around the entire course until the final tack, a few boat lengths from the finish, where Kookaburra managed to get her nose in front to win by 14 seconds, with Resurgent one minute behind in 3rd.

The fleet found itself in sunny conditions and a lovely North Easter for the first Two Island Race of the season. A good battle up front all around the course had Allons-y winning on Handicap followed by Gen-X & Papillon.

Perfect conditions greeted the fleet for the first race of the season; Retriever. Gen X stormed around the course to take victory ahead of Alkina & Cariad on PHS. Watch the action here:

The sailing season gets underway next month from September 6th including Kids Learn to Sail with absolute beginners starting on the 13th.

Avalon's program is a little different from other clubs as our kids sign up for the season. It's very popular, so make sure to register now. Information & registration for our learn to sail program is on our website: https://www.revolutionise.com.au/avalonsailingclub/learn-to-sail

Avalon's learn to sail program for children follows the Australian Discover Sailing curriculum for absolute beginners (Blue Group) and those who are progressing their skills (Red Group). Fees cover the entire sailing season of 26 sailing days on Sunday mornings during the season.

Children (Ages 6 - 16) progress through the stages according to their individual capability, with older kids advancing quicker than the younger ones.

Avalon sailing club is a relaxed family oriented club that is run by parent volunteers. Our certified coaches all started their sailing in Blue Group at Avalon before competing in State & National regattas, and are very popular with the kids. We also just happen to have the best location on Pittwater !

Whilst we are well known for our relaxed welcoming vibe, world famous local sailors who learned at Avalon before joining RPAYC youth program include America's Cup & SailGP sailors Jimmy Spithill, Nina Curtis & Natasha Bryant.
