There’s something about the way people enter this room for yin on a Tuesday night.

It’s hard to put into words.

It’s like they breathe out. Like they walk through the door and just... let go. I can feel it. It’s palpable.

On the surface, yin looks gentle, no sweat, no big exertion. But it asks something quieter of us. To stretch. To change the shape of the body. To slow down enough to actually be with our own thoughts.

And sometimes that’s the harder part, isn’t it?

We need yang in our lives too: weights, walking, exercise, heat. Our health depends on it.

But can I ask you, where do you create “yin” energy in your life?

You don’t have to come to my class. That’s not really what this is about.

This is just a question for you 🤍

Where is your yin in life?
Where is the softness?
Where is the making of time?
Where is the space?

Something to consider.

A couple of lifetimes ago, in a little town called Stratford-upon-Avon, I completed a stone massage course.

This wasn’t simply a massage course with stones added. It was a very specific form of stone therapy called LaStone Massage, created by Mary Nelson. The entire 90-minute treatment is performed using heated basalt stones and cool marble stones.

Honestly, it was bliss. Pure heaven.

After completing the course, I bought my own beautiful collection of basalt and marble stones. When the time came to return home, I carefully packed them up and sent them back to Australia.

I think I performed about five treatments before life changed direction. Not many, I know! But no regrets; everything we do adds texture and depth to our lives. The stones were packed away and, for many years, sat quietly in our shed.

Waiting for a new life.
A new purpose.

The theme of this morning’s restorative class was the in-between - the space where nothing needs to be rushed, and where you make room for what is becoming in its own time.

It felt especially fitting to mention these stones here for you to know a little more about my own experience and journey.

They now have a place in the studio, resting gently on the body during restorative poses and adding a beautiful sense of weight, warmth and grounding.

Their purpose has changed, but they were never without value.

Perhaps they were simply waiting for the right time to become something new.

I love bringing these thoughtful little extras into class. 🤍 And I’m loving letting you in on my own energy for Tiroana Collective

Can I say something with love? Please don’t get too exhausted before you create true rest for your body and mind.

Many of us wait until we’re already running on empty (me included) but what if rest was something you chose earlier?

That’s what restorative yoga is to me: intentional rest. Not because you’ve earned it or reached your limit, but because you’ve made space for it.

And yes, you might say, “But I do rest.”

Netflix. Scrolling. Lying on the sofa.

Ok these can feel restful, but (and we know this) when we do these things the truth is the body is still ✔️but unfortunately the mind remains completely switched on.

Once a month, I offer Surrender & Rest, a two-hour restorative yoga practice with Yoga Nidra Meditation.

I know two hours sounds like a lot. But I challenge you to check your weekly screen time and you may notice that the time is already there. It’s simply being used differently.

Two hours a month is around 30 minutes a week.

Surrender and Rest is exactly what it says. A space to let go. To breathe. To find yourself a little bit. To feel supported. To rest……..

Perhaps the question isn’t whether you’re tired enough to rest.

Perhaps it should be whether you’re willing to rest before you have to.

If SURRENDER & REST feels like something you need right now, send me a message, and I’ll send you all the details 🤍

I’d love to see you in the next Surrender and Rest class at Tiroana Meditation & Yoga Collective

🌑 Last night, in the early hours of the morning while most of us were quietly sleeping, there was a New Moon in Leo.

If you don’t usually follow the moon, a New Moon is a time for setting intentions and considering new beginnings. It’s a chance to create a little space and ask, What do I want to create? What do I see for my future? (Even if only for the next month).

Honestly, I am feeling this New Moon quite deeply today.

I’ve woken with a real sense of questioning what I want to create for myself. Where do I see my business going? What do I want to be more authentic about? Where am I ready to be seen?

Leo is connected to courage, creativity, self-expression and a willingness to take up your space.

As I write this, I’m actually feeling quite emotional, those words couldn't feel truer.

I’ve connected with the moon for a long time, and moments like this remind me why. When you pay attention, journal and become quiet enough to listen, things can come forward that you may not have been able to hear before.

There is so much around us in nature, in the sky and on the earth that can help you understand yourself and live more authentically. To listen. To quietly observe. To really sit in your own presence.

If you have a little time today, sneak some New Moon energy into your day. Sit quietly and consider:
Where am I ready to be seen, heard and fully expressed?
What would I create if I allowed myself to be bold, playful and unapologetically visible?
How can I lead from my heart with greater courage, generosity and self-trust?

These are the exact questions I’ve sat with during this New Moon, and they have shifted something within me. I’m gifting them to you to see if they resonate with you too.

There’s no pressure to have the answers. Simply become quiet, write down what comes forward and notice what is asking for your attention.

I hope this New Moon brings you some beautiful energy. Shona 🌑🦁

Someone recently told me that they had heard something that felt life-changing:

“You are not your thoughts.”

My immediate response was, “That is meditation.”

But afterwards, I found myself reflecting on my own teaching.

Have I spoken enough about what meditation is really inviting you to discover? Or have I sometimes stayed with the safer language of rest, relaxation and taking time for yourself?

Meditation can certainly help you feel more settled, relaxed, even. But meditation can also have other intentions.

Some forms of meditation, particularly awareness-based practices, teach you to observe what is happening within you without immediately becoming entangled in it.

A thought may arise, but that does not make it true.

A feeling may be present, but it does not have to become your entire identity.

An impulse may appear, but you do not always have to act upon it.

Through practice, you begin to recognise the difference between having a thought and being carried away by it. You create a small but meaningful space between what arises and how you respond.

This does not mean thoughts are irrelevant or that difficult feelings should be dismissed. Thoughts and feelings are part of your experience. They can carry information and deserve compassionate attention.

But they are not the whole of you.

There is also awareness, the part of you capable of noticing:

“This is a thought.”

“This is fear.”

“This is the story my mind is creating.”

“This is what I am experiencing right now.”

Perhaps the deeper purpose of meditation is not to empty the mind or escape your life.

Perhaps it is to see your inner experience clearly enough that you are no longer unconsciously directed by everything that moves through you.

This is the depth I want to bring more openly into PAUSE Meditation Classes, not in a way that forces a particular experience, but in a way that allows meditation to become more than simply feeling relaxed for 45 minutes.

Because meditation is not only a place to rest.

It is a place to meet yourself with awareness.

May these words find you where you are today,

Shona

“I can meditate at home… so why would I come to a class?”

It’s a question I’m often asked.

The beauty of meditation is that it can be practised almost anywhere. Your home practice is incredibly valuable, and I always encourage it.

A weekly class offers something different: dedicated time to pause, gentle guidance, the opportunity to explore meditation techniques, and a regular rhythm that can help strengthen your practice at home.

Meditation isn’t about choosing one or the other. Home practice and class practice complement each other beautifully.

✨ Do you enjoy meditating at home, in a class, or a little of both? I’d love to hear your experience below.

If you’re looking to establish or reconnect with a regular meditation practice, I’d love to welcome you to PAUSE Meditation on Monday evenings at Tiroana. Whether you’re completely new or have been meditating for years, you’ll be warmly welcomed. 🌿

Ever wondered what actually happens in a Yin Yoga class?

This is a sped-up glimpse into one of last month’s sequences. In reality, each shape is held for around 3–5 minutes (sometimes longer), allowing the body time to soften rather than stretch by force.

Unlike more active styles of yoga that focus on strengthening muscles, Yin Yoga gently targets the deeper connective tissues, fascia, ligaments, tendons and the joint capsules. As the muscles relax, the body is invited to release tension and improve mobility gradually.

You’ll notice lots of bolsters, blankets, blocks and cushions throughout the class. They’re not there to make the practice “easier”; they’re there to make it more supportive.

Props help you:
🤍 Find a shape that suits your body.
🤍 Reduce unnecessary muscular effort.
🤍 Stay comfortable for longer holds.
🤍 Feel safe enough for your nervous system to soften.
🤍 Practise without striving or forcing.

Everybody is different, so props allow each person to experience the pose's intention rather than trying to achieve a particular shape.

Yin Yoga also offers something many of us rarely experience… stillness. As the body becomes quiet, there is space to notice the breath, observe the mind, and be present.

Sometimes the deepest work isn’t about doing more; it’s about allowing more.

Have you tried Yin Yoga before?

The studio is now closed for two weeks over the school holidays.

This little pause gives me time to regroup, spend time with visiting family, and return ready for another beautiful term of classes, connection and practice.

Thank you to everyone who has stepped into the studio so far this year, whether you have been part of Tiroana from the beginning or have only recently joined. It is a privilege to hold this space, and your presence continues to shape it.

Classes return with PAUSE Monday Meditation on 13 July. Most classes are now available to book online, with SURRENDER & REST to be released soon.

There are also a few lovely offerings ahead:
• The final Women’s Circle for 2026 in August
• PAUSE & BEGIN: Meditation Foundations Workshop in September

PAUSE & BEGIN is for anyone wanting to understand meditation more clearly, feel more comfortable practising in class or at home, and build a simple, realistic practice that fits into everyday life.

Enjoy the school holidays and take good care. I look forward to welcoming you back into the studio soon.
