Around 70% of all tennis points are won or lost within the first four shots, from junior tennis right through to the professional level.
That’s why last week’s focus was on serve +1 and return +1 patterns.
On serve, we worked on using serve to move our opponent wide, then looking to attack the next ball with our forehand to take control of the point as early as possible.
On return, we practised two strategies:
• Against a strong first serve, we aimed to neutralise the point before looking for a forehand opportunity.
• Against a second serve, we looked to be more aggressive, attacking the return down the line and using our forehand on the next shot to take control of the rally.
The goal was to help players recognise opportunities to take the initiative early and build points with intention, rather than simply reacting to the ball.

Week 3 of our guided competition focused on the “4 Cones” concept.
A strong position inside the court allows players to be more aggressive, create sharper angles (cracking the singles line), and hit shorter attacking balls.
A bad or compromised position is when players are behind the baseline in a defensive position, forcing them to hit deeper balls down the middle of the court. This closes angles and limits opportunities for their opponent to attack from inside the court.
Players need to constantly assess their court position and respond according to what the ball allows them to do — hitting the right shot at the right time trying to target the right cone based on their position on the court.

In week two of our Guided Junior Competition, we focused on taking time away from the opponent and the strategies that help players achieve this.
1. Court Position
Coming to the net gives players approximately 63% more chance of winning the point compared to staying on the baseline. We discussed a specific pattern of play where players attack a short ball on the forehand side, as well as where to position themselves on the court when approaching the net.
2. Taking the Ball Early
We emphasised the importance of getting to the ball early, maintaining balance, and using a lower base to stay balanced through the shot.
We also highlighted the growing importance of footwork in an increasingly fast-paced game.

Last night marked Week 1 of our Guided Junior Competition, where we focused on how to force errors and strategies to attack the second serve.
It was a fantastic evening filled with quality matches and plenty of learning opportunities for every player.
We’re already looking forward to next week!
