🏐 RESPECT THE WHISTLE | PASSING DISTANCES

How much space does a player actually need when passing the ball? 🤔

Rule 12 covers three important passing-distance situations:

1️⃣ SHORT PASS
There must be enough space for an opponent to have a genuine opportunity to deflect or intercept the ball as it travels between players.

2️⃣ OVER A THIRD
The ball must be touched or caught by a player in **each third of the court** when it travels over a third.

3️⃣ ACROSS THE TRANSVERSE LINE
When the ball is played across the transverse line, it must be caught or touched in one of the two adjacent thirds.

👉 The key takeaway: Passing isn't just about getting the ball to your teammate — there needs to be enough space and the ball needs to travel through the court correctly.

These calls can happen quickly, so understanding the rule helps players recognise why the whistle has been blown.

🌸 2026 BNA SPRING SEASON – PROPOSED GAME TIMES 🌸

We’ve put together our proposed game times for the 2026 Spring Season, with games played on Monday evenings from 19 October to 7 December.

⚠️ Please note: These are proposed times only and are subject to change depending on final court allocations and team registrations.

We’ll confirm the final competition structure and game times once registrations are finalised.

🏐 EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY: THE BENCH 🏐

Our next spotlight is on an important part of game day that can sometimes become a little crowded — the team bench.

The bench is there for the players and team officials who are involved in the game. Keeping this area clear and organised helps everyone do their job and allows players to safely enter and leave the court.

👥 WHO CAN BE ON THE BENCH?

The bench area should be limited to the players and designated team officials for that team.

This may include:

🏐 Players — including those who are waiting to take the court.

📣 Coach — responsible for coaching and providing instruction to the team.

📋 Team Manager — supporting the team with organisation and game-day requirements.

🩹 Designated bench personnel, where applicable — assisting with the team's game-day responsibilities.

🚫 WHO SHOULD NOT BE ON THE BENCH?

The bench isn't an additional spectator area.

Parents, family members, friends and other spectators should remain in the designated spectator area rather than sitting or standing on the team bench.

This helps ensure:

✔️ Players have adequate space
✔️ Team officials can communicate effectively
✔️ Players can safely move on and off the court
✔️ The bench remains organised and free from unnecessary distractions
✔️ Everyone knows where they should be during the game

💚 WHY DOES IT MATTER?

It might seem like a small thing, but keeping the bench to the people who are there for a team role helps create a safe, organised and professional game-day environment.

So when you're heading to the courts, remember:

Players and team officials on the bench.
Parents and spectators in the spectator area.

Everyone has a role.
Everyone has a place.
Everyone has a role to play.

🏐 EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY: PARENTS & SPECTATORS 🏐

Our next spotlight turns to the people who bring the biggest cheers from the sideline — our parents and spectators.

Supporting a player is one of the most important roles you can have. The way we behave on the sideline can have a huge impact on a player's confidence, enjoyment and experience of the game.

A great parent and spectator:

👏 Cheer positively — encourage your team and celebrate effort, teamwork and good play rather than focusing on the scoreboard.

🏐 Let the players play — resist the temptation to coach, instruct or call directions from the sideline. That's the coach's role.

🗣️ Respect the umpires — decisions won't always go the way we think they should. Questioning, arguing with or criticising umpires is not acceptable.

🤝 Respect everyone— players, coaches, opposition teams, officials, volunteers and other spectators all deserve to feel safe and supported.

❤️ Focus on the experience — ask your player if they had fun, what they enjoyed and what they learned rather than simply asking whether they won.

🙌 Be the example — our young players are watching. They learn how to respond to decisions, mistakes, wins and losses by watching the adults around them.

🚫 Know when to step back — sometimes the best support we can give is simply being there, encouraging our player and allowing them to enjoy the game.

Remember, the sideline is part of the game-day environment too.

Our players should be able to look towards the sideline and see the people who love and support them — not hear criticism, pressure or arguments.

Cheer for them. Encourage them. Let them play.

Our next spotlight is on the person who often keeps everything running behind the scenes — the Team Manager.

Being a Team Manager is about much more than making sure the team sheet is filled in. They are an important link between the club, coach, players and families and play a big part in creating an organised and positive game-day experience.

A great Team Manager:

📋 Keeps things organised — helping make sure team requirements, game-day information and important details are communicated clearly.

📣 Communicates effectively — sharing relevant information with families and players while helping avoid confusion and unnecessary stress.

🤝 Supports the coach — allowing the coach to focus on coaching by helping with the many organisational tasks that happen around the team.

👥 Supports players and families — being a friendly point of contact and helping everyone understand what is expected of them.

🏐 Helps create a positive team environment — encouraging respect, inclusion, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

🚫 Leaves the coaching to the coach — supporting the coach's decisions rather than directing players from the sideline or getting involved in coaching matters.

💚 Represents the club — remembering that their behaviour and communication contribute to the way our club is experienced by players, families, officials and opposition teams.

The Team Manager may not be the loudest voice around the court, but they play an incredibly important role in helping a team function smoothly.
