Winter Championship – Round 3 Race Report

Round 3 of the Winter Championship was run under beautiful sunny conditions following a chilly start to the morning. With 34 entries on hand, it promised to be an action packed day, and it certainly delivered, with great racing across all classes.

Kyosho Racing
With 7 entries, Kyosho racing was, as always, full of thrills and spills.

Q1 went to Big Stu, ahead of John Dennis, with Darren Perry in P3.
Q2 saw positions shuffle, with John Dennis taking the win from Big Stu, and Daniel Wilson grabbing third just ahead of Darren. This locked in the top four qualifier positions for the finals.

Finals:
A1: Big Stu took the win from John, Darren finishing third.
A2: Big Stu again secured the win, this time ahead of Daniel and Darren, with second and third still undecided heading into the final race.
A3: Promised to be action packed—and it delivered. Big Stu completed the hat trick with another win, John comfortably taking second ahead of Daniel.

Kyosho Results
1. Stuart Sinclair
2. John Dennis
3. Daniel Wilson

TCR
The TCR class fielded three entries, and it was great to see Scott Latimer back on track after some time away.
Both qualifiers and all three finals were largely processional, with Jamie O’Brien demonstrating impressive consistency all day. Jamie took TQ and the overall win from Glen Coates, with Scott finishing third.
Despite the results, Glen and Scott enjoyed several close battles throughout the day, although they were no match for Jamie, even with race control trying their best to get into his head before every race!

TCR Results
1. Jamie O’Brien
2. Glen Coates
3. Scott Latimer

21.5 Touring
The largest field of the day once again belonged to the 21.5 class, with 16 entries.

Q1: Gerry Thomas took the win from Sam Winspear, with Jack Cooper in third.
Q2: Gerry again topped the timesheets, but this time Jack claimed second ahead of Sam. This locked the grid for the A finals.

Finals:
A1: Gerry led from start to finish, completing 18 laps, while the rest of the field managed 17. Sam finished second ahead of Jack after some excellent sportsmanship from Jack, who re addressed after accidentally tagging Sam during a passing move.
A2: Much the same as A1, with Gerry putting down another commanding 18 lap run. Jack and Sam followed in second and third, one lap down.
A3: With the overall already secured, Gerry elected to sit out. Jack led from the start, while Sam suffered early car issues and was forced out. Glen Coates drove a strong race to take second, with Darren “Carnage” Perry storming from 10th on the grid to finish third, turning earlier bad luck into a great result.

21.5 Results
1. Gerry Thomas
2. Jack Cooper
3. Sam Winspear

13.5 Touring
The 13.5 class had four entries, with Tim Forster debuting his new ARC for the first time at Bendigo—and it certainly looked the goods.

Q1: Tim dominated, winning by over a lap from Jamie O’Brien, with Scott Rawlings in third.
Q2: Jamie and Scott stepped up, matching Tim’s 19 lap pace. Scott took the win over Jamie, with Tim finishing third. This set the grid for the finals, with Nash McGillivary in P4.

Finals:
A1: A crash ended Tim’s race early, and Nash was unable to start. Scott and Jamie battled it out, both completing 19 laps, with Scott taking the win.
A2: Scott again jumped to the front, with Jamie staying close for the entire race. Scott held on to win by just 0.273 seconds, while Tim finished a lap down and Nash recorded a DNF.
A3: Scott, having secured the overall, sat out. Tim again suffered bad luck with another DNF, handing Jamie a comfortable win, two laps ahead of Nash.

13.5 Results
1. Scott Rawlings
2. Jamie O’Brien
3. Nash McGillivary

Modified
The day wrapped up with four Modified drivers showcasing some serious speed, and a bit of controversy.

Cooper Davis pushed the limits early, running an illegal body without headlights or grille. After a few rounds of good natured mockery, common sense prevailed and no sanction was issued. Scott from S2H Bodies came to the rescue with a Sharpie masterclass, as only Scott can.

With the weather cooling and tyre testing on 36s, grip was hard to find.

Q1 & 2 Cooper was ultra consistent, taking both qualifiers ahead of Jack Dewhurst, Brad Gale, and Karl Popkorn.

Finals:
A1: Jack showed improved pace, trading lap times with Cooper, but Cooper’s experience prevailed with a 3 second win. Brad crashed heavily on the straight, registering a DNF and providing one of the day’s most spectacular moments, promoting Karl to third.
A2: Only two cars finished. Cooper again led from start to finish. Jack hit the wall on lap one and, after fighting back past Karl, chose to retire due to low grip. Brad chased Cooper but couldn’t close the gap, taking second. Karl retired with car issues but completed enough laps for third.
A3: More of the same from Cooper, leading every lap for a clean sweep. Jack and Brad looked set to battle for second before Brad spun in the sweeper after touching the yellow paint. Jack took second, with Karl finishing third—giving his Xray X4 ’22 a fitting farewell before upgrading to the X4 ’26.

Modified Results
1. Cooper Davis
2. Jack Dewhurst
3. Karl Popkorn

Race Report – Bonus Race Day

Yesterday the club hosted a special Bonus Race Day for the die hard enthusiasts, with 21 entries supporting the event. It turned into a great day of racing with plenty of laughs, close battles, and some very entertaining moments on a flowing layout that received lots of positive feedback from the racers.

Truck Class
The trucks made their return today—only two entries, but they delivered plenty of entertainment.
Stephen took TQ, while Lachy grabbed 2nd, with both drivers using some “questionable” tactics that kept everyone laughing and engaged. Truck racing always looks cool, and hopefully a few more trucks get dusted off for future rounds.

1st STEPHEN BALLESTRINO
2nd LACHLAN MCGILLIVRAY

Kyosho Class
Five entries in the Kyosho class produced some tight battles throughout the day.
Darren, Daniel, and John were locked together for much of the racing, consistency proving the key. Daniel led several races but a few costly mistakes opened the door for Darren, who claimed TQ and the overall win, followed by John in 2nd and Daniel in 3rd, who had to leave before the day wrapped up.

1st DARREN PERRY
2nd JOHN DENNIS
3rd DANIEL WILSON

21.5 Class
The biggest field of the day with eight entries, and it delivered.
Qualifying saw Gerry set the tone early with a comfortable win ahead of Goody and Lyndon. Q2: More of the same, Gerry again set the pace with similar times, securing TQ with increasing speed across the runs.
Top 3 after qualifying:
P1 - GERRY THOMAS
P2 - GODWIN MADRIDEJOS
P3 - DARREN PERRY
Gerry rocketed off the start and disappeared into the distance.
Goody started cleanly and gave chase, while Darren took a detour via the bus stop, losing several positions.
The battle for the remaining podium places came down to Lyndon vs Goody, with a back marker causing a small incident that flipped Lyndon, luckily he landed back on his wheels. He regrouped, chased down Goody, and secured 2nd, with Gerry winning with a sharp 18 lap run.
With Goody called home, the fight for P2 reset. Gerry again checked out and laid down another consistent, fast, 18 lap run. Lyndon was able to pass Darren at the first corner but couldn’t match Gerry’s pace. Darren (“Carnage Curley”) held on for 3rd after a spirited battle with Max, Dad taking the bragging rights this round.
With the top two overall already locked in, the last final was a chance for one more shuffle. On Lap 6, Gerry made his first mistake of the day, ending up on his lid and waiting for a marshal. Lyndon slipped past and built a gap, but Gerry stormed back with fast laps to retake the lead and win, ahead of Lyndon.
This time Max got the family bragging rights, taking 3rd ahead of Darren.

1st GERRY THOMAS
2nd LYNDON TURVEY
3rd DARREN PERRY

13.5 Class
Three drivers fronted for 13.5, including the welcome return of Leigh Cline, who drove like he never missed a meeting. Despite the break, he hadn’t lost any speed or race craft.
Both qualifiers belongs to Jamie, with constant speed and minimal errors he was able to take the TQ position from Leigh and Nash
In the first main it was the same story as the qualifying rounds with Jamie taking the early lead and putting a gap on the field. Nash was able grab 2nd early and hold on with Leigh having a few car issues completing only 14 laps for 3rd
The second main again saw Jamie storm to the front taking the win from Leigh who had a much better run and was starting to find form. Nash with car troubles complete 8 laps to finish in 3rd
The final race of the day Jaime completed the trifecta with another dominate win. The real race was for the minor positions, Nash now with a new battery got off the line very fast passing Leigh on the sweeper giving him track position early in the piece. Coming onto the straight Leigh tapped Nash and spun and had to be marshalled with gave Nash a buffer. Leigh with some very consistent driving was able to catch up but a couple late errors saw Nash able to hold on to second place in one of the best races of the day

1st JAMIE OBRIEN
2nd NASH MCGILLIVRAY
3rd LEIGH CLEINE

Modified Class
Modified also saw three drivers on track, producing some fast and consistent racing.
Brad showing that consistency is key taking Q1 with his car looking the goods. Jack hit back in Q2 after Brad made a mistake and let Jack though to get over the line first, Karl in second and Brad taking 3rd.
The Finals Jack switched on, his car looked like it was on rails as he “tested” tyres for upcoming events taking the first race from Brad & Karl. The second race saw Jack go faster again, with 15.5 hot lap and averaging 15.8 to take race 2. Brad had some unfortunate luck having a belt coming off finishing his race early recoding a DNF. Karl had a consistent run taking 2nd. The third and final race saw Jack continue his form crossing the line first, the battle between second & third saw positions change a few times before Karl found his rhythm taking 2nd ahead of Brad.

1st JACK DEWHURST
2nd KARL POPKORN
3rd BRAD GALE

Wrap Up
All in all, it was a fantastic day of racing, camaraderie, and good vibes. The layout flowed beautifully, and the atmosphere was spot on. Big thanks to the Prez for running the show and providing commentary, and for all the people that helped marshal. A special Mention to Lyndon who took come and blew the track down on Saturday, this does make it a lot easier to start on time come Sunday morning.

Next race is through the streets of Bendigo for the Easter Event this coming Saturday which always is a fun event. With the Truckies Cup up for grabs it is sure to be a fun event
Next official race is Round 3 of the Club Championship—now heading into the pointy end of the season.
Make sure your cars are legal and at correct weight, as scrutineering may be happening. 😉

Happy Easter! Stay safe and take care.
