Bone pressure can assist brain healing:

Your brain is talking to your skeleton, and more than you probably realize. For example, doctors have long noticed something odd about people with traumatic brain injuries—their bones heal faster. When some brain cells are damaged, they release vesicles filled with proteins that travel to the bone stem cells and stimulate growth. Naturally, researchers began to wonder: If damaged brains can heal bones, can bones heal damaged brains?

To find out, researchers from Southern Medical University in China flipped the script on TBI-accelerated bone growth. They artificially caused traumatic brain injuries and strokes in the brains of mice and pigs. They then outfitted the brain-damaged animals with electronic devices that would rhythmically tap on their shin bones a couple times a second for five days.

Remarkably, it worked. According to their study recently published in Nature Neuroscience, the tapping reduced brain cell loss, promoted neuron growth, and relieved chronic inflammation. It also increased both animals’ survival time and improved their motor function and ability to navigate mazes, suggesting the process led to less memory loss.

The researchers traced the effects to a relatively large protein in bone cells called PIEZO1. This propeller-shaped protein has three spiral “blades” that curve upward surrounding an ion channel. When pressure is applied, the blades flex down and the ion channel opens, letting in positively charged signalling elements like sodium, potassium, and calcium. In their tests of animals without PIEZO1, the team found none of the healing benefits of shin tapping.

It’s a little strange, but not if you consider that bones act sort of like endocrine organs. They actively regulate mineral levels, secrete a growth factor that acts on other organs, and hormones that can lower blood glucose and boost testosterone. The endocrine system operates via feedback loops, so in a way it would be even weirder if the brain-bone axis only went one way.

But it’s still weird

There is complex research getting completed on GLP1 effects on ghrelin and leptin receptors and what it means for the body. In a world where ‘just eat less and move more’ doesn’t work for some humans, it is great to see science putting the effort in to support the observations. There will never be a one size fits all approach to managing a human body. There may be more than one factor causing a manifestation of illness. Let’s challenge our GP’s to ensure they check for reasons why someone isn’t well. My heart breaks every time an exhausted, overweight person comes to me and says that their doc told them all their problems are due to being overweight, so just go and exercise and eat less - yet they haven’t done a full blood test, or even asked them what are they actually eating, how much sleep they get, what kind of work they do (physical or sedentary) or how much psychological stress they have in their life.
I am looking forward to a better supported population due to a better understanding of how our human bodies function. Keep asking questions.

A biological miracle is happening in somatosensory neuroscience labs where Brain Prize 2026 winners Professors David Ginty and Patrik Ernfors have revealed the complete cellular architecture of touch and pain — including the discovery of entirely new pain-sensing terminal Schwann cells that wrap around unmyelinated pain nerve endings and actively amplify or dampen pain signals — a cell type never previously known to participate in pain processing that is now identified as the key gatekeeper of chronic pain.

The discovery explains one of medicine's most frustrating mysteries: why chronic pain persists long after tissue damage heals. These terminal Schwann cells can become permanently sensitized after injury — continuing to amplify pain signals through synaptic mechanisms even when no damage remains. Targeting these cells with drugs that specifically calm their sensitization state — rather than broadly blocking nerve signaling — could eliminate chronic pain in millions of patients suffering from fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and post-surgical pain syndromes without the cognitive side effects of current painkillers.

⚠️Safety alert – Counterfeit weight loss products claiming to contain GLP-1⚠️

We are issuing an updated safety advisory after testing confirmed counterfeit imported weight loss products.

These products falsely claim to contain glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists or GLP-1 analogues, posing potential risks to your health.

Our laboratory testing of several imported unregistered products has confirmed that the products contain no GLP-1 or any GLP-1 analogues, despite being labelled as such.

GLP-1 receptor agonists (like semaglutide, tizepatide, liraglutide) are prescription-only medicines in Australia and should only be used under medical supervision.

For your safety, only buy prescription medicines from a local registered pharmacy. Do not buy unregistered GLP-1 products thorough social media or other digital platforms.

The findings of a landmark study have revealed that gluten sensitivity, which affects approximately 10% of the global population, is not actually about gluten but part of the way the gut and brain interact.

In the largest combined analysis, only a few tightly controlled trials found any real gluten reaction. Overall, people’s responses were no different from when they were given a placebo. This study is expected to set a new benchmark for how gluten sensitivity is defined, diagnosed and treated.
