That’s why we need a range of voices around the table.

You don’t need to have years of committee experience to contribute. You might be a competitor who sees opportunities for improvement, an official or coach with valuable technical knowledge, a volunteer who understands what makes events work, or simply someone passionate about seeing your discipline thrive.

EWA Welfare Corner: Saddle Fitting

SADDLE FIT: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Did you know an ill-fitting saddle can affect your horse far beyond the saddle area itself?

In our latest video, Mel Ellery (owner and qualified saddle fitter at M equestrian) sits down with Holly to break down exactly what happens when a saddle doesn't fit properly — and why it should be part of your horse's regular care routine, just like the farrier or dentist.

👉 Too wide? Extra pressure at the base of the withers, with possible swelling or irritation.
👉 Too tight in front? Pressure gets pushed down into the lower back instead of spreading evenly.
👉 Not sitting straight? Your horse may start compensating — uneven muscling, one-sided stiffness, or a reluctance to engage behind.

Left unchecked, these issues don't just affect comfort — they can show up as behavioural changes (spookiness, bucking, a drop in performance) and, over time, contribute to real physical wear and tear.

The takeaway? Saddle fit isn't a "set and forget" job. Horses change with age, workload, discipline and even season — so their saddle fit should be checked regularly too.
