MESTRE MÔA DO KATENDÊ - DOCUMENTARY.
His birth name was Romualdo Rosário da Costa, capoeira master, composer and percussionist, known by Bahians as Mestre Moa do Katendê.
Catendê (Katendê), in Bantu mythology is an inquice of leaves, agriculture and science, equivalent to the orixá Oçânhim.
He was born in Salvador, in the neighborhood of Engenho Velho da Federação, in 1954.
He was one of the strongholds of Salvador's black ancestral culture, which fought against socio-racial inequality, where he claimed that it was necessary to "re-Africanize" youth.
Mestre Moa started in Capoeira, still a child, with only 8 years old, becoming one of the biggest names of capoeira Angola, in Bahia.
In 1978, he founded one of the most important “Bloco Afro” in the country, Badauê, which was immortalized in the voice of Caetano Veloso, through the song "Beleza Pura" (boy from Badauê...).
He also founded, in 1995, the Bloco Afro "Amigos do Katendê".
In 1977 he won the Festival da Canção do Bloco Ilê Aiyê.
Môa do Katendê's life was cowardly interrupted at the age of 65, when he was murdered from behind, with 12 stab wounds.
The murder, which took place on October 8, 2018, days before a presidential election, had repercussions across the country and also abroad, and was motivated by political intolerance.
The passing of Mestre Moa do Katendê was mourned by everyone: family, friends, admirers, politicians from different parties, religious leaders, capoeiristas, musicians...
At Dique do Tororó, close to Arena Fonte Nova, an art was installed, in the form of a berimbau, with the image of the late capoeirista.
Moa's death was the subject of a documentary in 2018, directed by Argentinean-Bahian filmmaker Carlos Pronzato, entitled A Primeira Vítima.
And a new documentary is being shown in Salvador (03 to 09/08), entitled Môa Raiz Afro Mãe, directed by Gustavo McNair, with testimonies by Gilberto Gil, Letieres Leite, Lazzo Matumbi, BaianaSystem, Marcia Short, among others.
The documentary is being shown at Circuito Saladearte, MAM and at the Cinema do Museu. (Salvador-Bahia-Brazil)
