I dedicate this page to all my friends and colleagues who swim for health and fitness.

Exercise is easy, exercise is fun,

Exercise is great for everyone,

Run, jog, walk, run or skip,

Make sure you do at least a little bit. Increase your exercise day by day,

Keep at it and you will find a way,

To be healthy, to be aware,

Exercise keeps you healthy,

Exercise takes care,

Exercise brings benefits,

Many benefits that are free,

Remember with exercise,

You can live long and care

For those interested, here is a little bit of history of my A Lifetime in Masters Swimming. No wonder I am having a long rest. πŸ˜‚πŸŠπŸŠto read, make it larger by clicking on the + button. *Note: I travelled with Simon during his years in the RAAF, kept the home front safe while he was away on 5 Deployments along with travelling from State to State. Years ago, I inquired about Life Membership with the Masters Swimming. The answer was no as I had not been in one place for 20 years! Well, if that is what to expect when supporting my husband while he was in the Australian Defence, I shake my head. I personally feel that is so wrong. See less

Hi everyone,

I’m taking a little time to step back and focus on my personal goals for a while.

The page will still be here, but there won’t be regular posts during this time.

At 41, Dara Torres asked officials to hold the start so a rival could fix her suit. Then she won the race.

It was the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, 50-meter freestyle. Sprinters were on the blocks when a swimmer behind Torres struggled with a torn suit. Confusion in the lane. Torres raised her hand and told officials to wait. The field stepped down. Minutes later, they reset. The gun fired. Torres exploded off the blocks and touched first. Oldest in the pool. Fastest in the pool. Ticket to Beijing secured.

The comeback had been years in the making. She had retired after Barcelona in 1992, returned for Sydney in 2000 and won five medals, stepped away again, gave birth to her daughter in 2006 β€” then chose one more sprint at history.

She rebuilt meticulously: strength training, resistance cords, flexibility, recovery, relentless attention to starts and finishes. She volunteered for enhanced drug testing to silence skeptics. Dawn practices became routine. Speed, not mileage, was the focus.

Trials confirmed it. She qualified individually in the 50 free and made the 100 free for relay duty. Breakouts and final strokes were drilled until automatic. No wasted laps. Just precision.

In Beijing, she became the oldest U.S. Olympic swimmer in history. Teenagers filled the ready room. Torres stood steady, eyes locked on the blocks.

In the 4Γ—100 freestyle relay, she delivered a blazing split and earned silver. In the 4Γ—100 medley relay, she anchored again, chasing down the water ahead for another silver.

Her final race was the 50 free. One length. No margin for error. She launched clean, held her line, and drove through the wall. The scoreboard showed the gap: second place by 0.01 seconds. A fingertip.

She smiled, tapped the rope, and waved to her daughter in the stands.

Some credited suits. Others said luck. The footage shows something clearer. She delayed her own start for fairness β€” and still outraced the field.

At 41, Dara Torres proved that speed isn’t defined by age.

It’s built by habit.
