The Art of Adaptation in Kenpo Karate 27/07/2026

Kenpo Karate is often described as a practical and intelligent martial art, but one of its greatest strengths is its ability to adapt. At its heart, Kenpo is not rigid or fixed. It is built on fluidity, movement, awareness and the understanding that no two situations are ever exactly the same.

The Art of Adaptation in Kenpo Karate In life, as in self-defence, we rarely get to choose the circumstances we face. We may be caught off guard, placed under pressure, or required to respond quickly to something unexpected. Kenpo teaches us that effective action comes from learning how to adapt - to the environment, to the person in fr...

Why Does Kenpo Have So Many Techniques? - Part Two 26/07/2026

New blog post - Why Does Kenpo Have So Many Techniques? - Part Two

Why Does Kenpo Have So Many Techniques? - Part Two In Part One, I looked at the conventional reasons why Kenpo contains 154 named self-defence techniques. The curriculum covers a broad range of attacks, and each technique teaches lessons that go well beyond the attack it begins with.

Doing a martial art isn’t just about fighting, or self-defence. Sometimes it’s about the Art itself. We focussed on staff set today, not that we run the risk of getting into a staff fight, or even have a staff handy if we get attacked. Sometimes being about trying to get better in the Art is enough…

Those explanations are true. I just do not think they are the whole story.

Why Does Kenpo Have So Many Techniques? - Part One

One of the more daunting things when you first begin training in Kenpo is looking at the technique chart on the wall.

Most Kenpo schools have one somewhere. It lists 154 named self-defence techniques spread across the belts. When you are still trying to remember which foot moves first in Delayed Sword, looking at a list of 154 techniques can make the road ahead seem very long.

Demonstrating all the aspects of Kenpo. Warming up with some forms to lock in our stances and movement then some kick shield work before practicing our techniques. Finished off with some light sparring. Any martial art will have different aspects to it, what makes a school right for you is what you need out of it. What Is the Best Martial Art? 11/07/2026

People often ask, “What is the best martial art?” It is the wrong question. The better question is, “What is the best martial art for me?”

That might sound like a small difference, but it changes everything. Because the best martial art depends entirely on what you are trying to get from it. A martial art that is perfect for one person may be completely wrong for someone else, not because the art is bad, but because the purpose is different.

Saturday focussed on pressure testing instinctive responses to attacks. We worked responding to straight and hooking punches, building up to not knowing what your opponent would throw. Using protective gear we were able to ramp up the intensity while remaining safe.
