Golfers taking up the game for the very first time is something great to see. It’s good for the game and as a coach it’s wonderful that I get to share in the joy that comes with seeing their first golf shot get into the air!

I saw this young man on the 30th of April for his first ever golf lesson. He presented with very common beginner golfer issues:

1. Low Point Distance = 15.3B
2. Low Point Height = 1.1cm Down
(Video 1)

Saw him for his second lesson on the 1st of May (I don’t normally do lessons this close together but he is only in the country for a week).

Second lesson saw massive improvements:

1. Low Point Distance = 10.5A
2. Low Point Height = 0.4cm Down

Here’s what we spoke about and changed:

1. The concept of hitting the ground after the golf ball. This is definitely a concept that is misunderstood with beginner golfers in my experience. With the use of chalk lines on the floor, I feel that he understands the concept a lot better and will definitely lead to well struck golf shots in time to come.

2. We spoke about 2 set up changes. Width of stance which was too wide and the position of the handle which was too far back.

3. Finally we spoke about him trying to stop his swing at P9 with his pelvis and torso rotated 90 degrees. Although he is nowhere near stopping at P9 it has made a massive difference.

Big changes in a short amount of time. I couldn’t be happier for him.

Thank you to the and for putting on a wonderful PGA Summit. Bringing our industry together for two days so that we can all get better and continue to grow the wonderful game of golf.

Being afforded the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in our game as well as outside of our game was a wonderful experience.

to name a few, thank you all for your wonderful insights.

Last but certainly not least, it was great seeing old friends and making new friends.

See you all at the next one 👍

A pretty special day out on the golf course. Had the privilege of knocking a little white ball around Pymble Golf Club] club with two South African cricketing legends

Safe to say I felt like a kid in a candy store 😁

What a great day.

Thanks guys 🙏🏻

Ever wondered what an online lesson looks like?

Here is one part of an online lesson that I did.

This golfer struggled with a severe case of the hooks which were caused by a seriously strong grip.

A grip change can be a very tough change to make however 2 weeks of sticking to the change and his grip will start feeling good and I believe that it will stop him from hooking the ball as much as he currently does.

Wondering why your body doesn’t want to rotate through impact?

Well in my opinion, there are two main reasons why.

1. Open club face at P6 (shaft parallel to ground in downswing).
2. Steep shaft pitch at P5 (lead arm parallel to ground in downswing)

If you want to rotate more (taking your bodies physical attributes into account), get your club face into a stronger position and get your shaft shallower.

NB If you have limited rotation, getting your shaft shallow on the downswing might be the worst thing that you can do.

Remember, CLUB FACE IS KING!

I’m no sports psychologist and I most certainly don’t pretend to be one but I think this on course thought process could really help a lot of you.

My friends are the go to guys IMO if you are needing help with the mental side of things!

Try and apply this the next time you play a round of golf and let me know how you get on.

Have fun out there.

Hitting shots into the wind?

What should you change?

Take more club and swing it smooth!

If you struggle with your upper body falling back away from the target through impact, try and hit some shots with your left hand low!

I remember seeing Matt Fitzpatrick hit full swing shots with his left hand low as part of his warm up at The Nedbank Golf Challenge a couple of years ago.

Interesting to see him chipping this way.

If slow rehearsal swings are good enough for the GOAT, they are probably good enough for you too!

Tag a mate that needs to slow down whilst trying to make a swing change.
