What a way to kick off Term 3 Elite Junior League ⚽

Week 1 of the EJL is done and what a day it was. Five QSA teams across U9, U10 and U12 competing at QUT Stadium, Kelvingrove — and the atmosphere and professionalism of the venue gave our players that next level feeling from the moment they arrived.

It’s not always easy on day one. New teammates, new opposition, new surfaces — but that’s exactly the environment that develops players. High quality opposition, structured coaching, and a competitive setup that gives our players experiences they simply don’t always get at club level.

Eight weeks of football ahead. We can’t wait to watch these teams grow. 🔥

Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. It could have happened sooner — but it’s good to see my old club back signing quality players who can hopefully help take them closer to competing at the top again. 🔴

That photo was taken before a ball was even kicked.

I was at Anderlecht — who were our Europa League opponent — and I’d arrived early as always. Before the warmup, before the crowd, before the performance began. That’s when you see the real picture. How a player moves when nobody’s watching. Their habits, their focus, their body language. The small things that never show up in highlights.

One player stood out before the game had begun. Technical, intelligent, composed. He confirmed it consistently during the match and also scored. I filed the report, and went back twice to confirm my initial opinion. But the timing wasn’t right - our squad profile and positional priorities meant it didn’t happen.

Nine years later he’s finally at Old Trafford.

I’m not saying I scouted him — he was already known across Europe. But I identified his potential, and what first caught my eye happened before the game even started.

That habit of watching — really watching — is something I’ve never switched off. It’s what I bring to every session at QSA.Because the players who develop the most aren’t always the best in the group. They’re the ones who arrive with intent. Who engage properly. Who hold themselves to a standard before anyone asks them to. The extra 1% in approach, ex*****on and self-expectation.

We see it every week at QSA. The player who turns up and goes through the motions gets the same session as the one who arrives ready to work — but they leave with something completely different.

Tielemans clearly had both from the moment he started warming up in an empty stadium in Belgium in 2017.

Eight years identifying players at the highest level taught me one thing above all else — you can’t fake the habits. The players who make it aren’t always the most talented. They’re the ones who leave their ego at the gate and do the work when nobody’s watching. That’s what we’re building at QSA every week. ⚽
