It’s easy being green at McIlwraith 💚 thanks to grants we’ve been awarded through the Maiwar Community Grant program sponsored by our local member, Michael Berkman - Greens MP for Maiwar. 🌱

As one of the valued Patrons of our Club, Michael has always shown a keen interest in the things that make our community stronger, so it was wonderful to share the progress we’ve made with two of our latest sustainability initiatives.💚🪴

Our community herb garden is thriving and is available for both members and the wider community to enjoy — perfect for adding a little fresh flavour to culinary creations!🍃🌿 For many of our members now living in apartments, having access to a shared garden space again has been really special.

We’ve also installed two compost bins that recycle our lawn clippings and turn them into nutrient-rich fertiliser for the garden ♻️ Such a great grassroots return on effort (… pun intended!) 😄🤣

It’s amazing what community projects can achieve when people come together with a shared vision. A big thank you to Michael for his ongoing support of our Club and community 🌼🤝

🏏 Second Level Doubles… First Class Play! 🌟

Saturday morning’s Second Level Doubles Competition was a fantastic showcase of competitive croquet, teamwork and club spirit! 👏🏏

Congratulations to 🏆 Jennifer Young and Ian Leivesley, who won a strongly contested best-of-three final against Deb Camden and Straughan Briggs. Well played by both pairs in a lively and enjoyable match! 👏

Our Second Level Doubles competition, designed for players with handicaps of 9 and above, continues to be a wonderful initiative — welcoming newer players into competition while giving everyone valuable opportunities to build skills, confidence and match experience. 💪✨

With six doubles pairs taking part, the morning was filled with great play, encouragement and plenty of fun on the lawns. 🌿☀️

A big thank you to Club Captain Andrew Cole for organising the event and to our trusty referee Penny Jackson for quietly supervising play throughout the morning. 🙏😊

What a wonderful day for the Inaugural McIlwraith Grand Challenge Open Doubles event! 🌟

Played on a perfect autumn morning, we were delighted to welcome teams from Burleigh Heads - Palm Beach Croquet Club, East Brisbane, Eildon Croquet Club, Stephens Croquet Club and Windsor Croquet Club along with a strong contingent of keen McIlwraith members.

In the Grand Challenge final, it was Burleigh Heads Palm Beach versus McIlwraith with the winners Beth Parker and Anne taking the win from McIlwraith’s Charles Mitchell and Steve O’Hare. Congratulations BHPB-ers! Enjoy the prize money while your names are etched on the Grand Challenge Gold Mallet perpetual trophy 🏆

The Plate final for the runners-up was an all-McIlwraith affair, with Rosie Dalton and Lynne Newcombe claiming the win from Kerrie Hodgson and Jennifer Young. Congratulations to all our players! 👏

A big thank you to all of the players who entered and embraced the day with such wonderful sportsmanship, enthusiasm and good spirit — you made the event so special.

A big thank you to our incredibly supportive referees — Liz Fleming (Tournament Referee), Penny Jackson, Greg Kerswell and Willie Silk — for generously giving their time and expertise to keep the games running so smoothly.

And special thanks to all of our wonderful McIlwraith volunteers who helped bring this new event to life in the spirit of our commitment to deliver a great player experience. 🤩

The Grand Challenge will now become a fixture on our annual calendar. We can’t wait to welcome players back again next year! 💚

It’s hard to capture just how excited we were to welcome World Croquet Federation referee and former World No 1, Liz Fleming, to McIlwraith recently for a special clinic! 🎉🤩

We had an incredible turnout of 35 members, all completely riveted as Liz—who knows the rule book inside out and isn’t afraid to use it! 😉—guided us through the finer points of the game.

No question was too simple or too tricky. Liz patiently walked us through scenarios from a referee’s perspective, sharing insights, clarifying rules, and deepening our understanding at every hoop.

Her passion for croquet is truly infectious ❤️ and she left us all feeling inspired, more confident, and eager to keep learning about this game we love so much.

A huge thank you, Liz—we loved every minute! 🙌
