Brisbane Aikikai

Brisbane Aikikai The Club was founded in 1992. It is affiliated with Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan through Aikido Shinryukan NZ.

We are an open-spirited dojo with a welcoming attitude, more than 30 years experience and a wealth of senior instructors including two 6th-Dan, one 5th-Dan and four 4th-dan black belts. We practice a mixture of traditional hand-to-hand and weapons work. We are affiliated with Hombu Dojo Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, through Nobuo Takase Shihan (8th Dan) and Aikido Shinryukan (NZ), so that all our

gradings are internationally recognised. We are a strictly not-for profit community organisation, run by a team of enthusiastic volunteers. Everyone is welcome from absolute beginners to experienced aikidoka alike - both men and women. Families are welcome, but please note that kids normally need to be a minimum of 10 years of age and to be accompanied on the mat by an adult until the age of 14. Beginners are welcome to start in any class, but we especially recommend including Thursday evening classes, which focus on fundamentals. You first class is always free and we have a cheap introductory deal for you to try us out for a month. Costs are currently (from Oct 31st, 2023):

1. Annual membership (which includes third party liability insurance):

Standard membership: $110
Family membership: $160
Concessionary rate: $90

2. Classes (7 days a week)

First class - free
Trial introductory package (new members): 1 Month unlimited training (up to 7 days a week) - $40.00
Standard adult members - $100.00 per month (unlimited training). Concessionary rate - $60.00 per month (unlimited training)
Family package - $170 per month (unlimited training for all family members)

For all inquiries, please drop us a line here on facebook, or to our e-mail address. The advertised phone number is also active, but not manned at all times and so there may be some delay getting back to you.

Furitama ζŒ―ι‚, literally translated as "soul shaking" or "spirit shaking

Furitama is most widely known outside of pure Shinto contexts through its adoption in traditional Aikido. The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, integrated Shinto purification rituals (Misogi) into his philosophy and daily training.

While it retains spiritual and meditative roots, in a martial arts setting it serves practical purposes:

Centering: It helps practitioners shift mental gears, clearing away the distractions of daily life to focus entirely on the present moment.

Energy Cultivation: It brings awareness to the hara (center of gravity and vital energy), which is essential for generating power, balance, and efficient movement in martial techniques.
