Last Saturday, our reigning Premiers and ladder-leading Div 1 Men welcomed the University of Queensland Roos to TigerTurf, as the curtain raiser for the Amanda Ferguson Cup.

The Roos remain the only side to take points off the Tiges this season. That was way back on 5 May in a pulsating 4–4 draw. Since then, the Tiger Machine has rattled off eleven straight wins.
Curiously, the Tiges seem to have only two gears.
First... and fifth!

Five of those victories have been by an average of eight goals, while three have been nail-biters decided by a solitary strike. There doesn't seem to be much in between.

So which gear would we see against the Roos?

Boydey, our Kiwi International, wasted no time answering that question, opening the scoring in just the fourth minute. Another goal before the break gave Easts a handy 2–0 halftime lead.

To their credit, UQ enjoyed some good passages of play after the restart and tried to work their way back into the contest. But this year's Tigers have become ruthlessly efficient inside the attacking circle.

Three unanswered second-half goals settled the issue and completed another polished performance from the ladder leaders.

So which gear would we see against the Roos?

As it turned out...Fifth gear.

The Tiger Machine keeps rolling. The challenge now isn't talent—it's maintaining the hunger that has carried them to the top of the ladder. History tells us that some teams save their best hockey for finals. The Tiges have given themselves every opportunity to be one of them.

As they say in Veigy-Foncenex… ...les champions ne lèvent jamais le pied trop tôt. "Champions never take their foot off the accelerator too soon."

Our Div 4 Women are doing their best to keep the pundits guessing.
Last weekend they battled eighth-placed Bulimba and hung on for a hard-earned 1–0 victory.
Yesterday they faced the ladder leaders, the Uni of QLD ... and promptly produced one of their best performances of the season, storming to a 4–1 win.

Go figure! Sport and consistency — what a contradiction!

If hockey were predictable, we'd all save ourselves the trouble and simply read the ladder.

The reward? The Tiges leap back into second place, just one point behind UQ, with Kedron a further two points adrift. You could throw a Tuscan tea towel over the teams chasing the top spots.

Our 5th Ladies team plays on Sundays in the Brisbane ML2.

They currently share top spot of the ladder with Redcliffe, and last Sunday they took on the 8th placed Kedron Wavell at the SHC, down by the river.

In what should have been an ‘easy’ game, the KW Wolves had other ideas on who was going to be Queen of the Castle on this Sunday evening.

The Tiges got off to a good start, taking a 1 - 0 lead at half-time.

The Wolves returned fire to equal the scores, but Rosie Breadsell had the last say, scoring the winner late in the game.

💚💚💚Today wasn't just another game of hockey at TigerTurf. It was a day to celebrate the life of Amanda Ferguson, a magnificent servant of both Easts and the University of Queensland.

The annual 💚Amanda Ferguson Cup💚 is always played in the right spirit, and it was especially meaningful to have Amanda's family there to share the occasion. Al Ferguson watched daughters Gen and Penny pull on the Tiger stripes, while Will was there to cheer them on as Easts and the UQ Roos renewed their friendly rivalry.

It was a genuine tussle.

The deadlock was finally broken just two minutes before halftime when Jill Gohdes deftly tipped in an Aleisha Neumann penalty corner to give the Tiges a 1–0 lead.

UQ with former Tiger, Ruby Harris always a danger threw everything at the second half, but the Tigers stood firm. Then, with five minutes remaining, Savannah Patterson led a merry chase down the right flank before linking with Sophie Hammond to seal the contest and put the result beyond doubt.

The ladder? Well, you could throw a Bushman's hanky over third to seventh. Four weeks ago the Tiges were sitting third, last week seventh, and today they're back to fifth. Every weekend feels like a game of snakes and ladders.

Marvellous day down at TigerTurf.

Amanda Ferguson Cup | Saturday 25th July 2026 💚

Join us at EHTT this Saturday for a special day of hockey as our Div 1 women play University of QLD Hockey Club in the Amanda Ferguson cup - a meaningful match for both our clubs.

The Amanda Ferguson cup will be played at 4:30pm @ EHTT.

Yesterday, our Div 1 Women took on second-placed Redcliffe down at TigerTurf.

Our Tiges continue to tease us—in the very best way. In recent weeks they've drawn with ladder leaders Commercial, beaten Kedron Wavell, stumbled against Labrador, and now faced another huge challenge against a talented Redcliffe outfit. They have now lost just once in their last seven outings.

The question wasn't whether Easts could play good hockey.

The question was: Which Ambush of Tigers would arrive at TigerTurf? Could they contain the dangerous Hannah C-S? Could they maintain their intensity for four quarters? Could they once again match it with one of the competition's heavyweights?

The opening half was a genuine arm wrestle. Both sides traded blows, forcing goalkeepers Bliss and Bowers into a string of excellent saves. Hannah C-S launched several of her trademark surging runs, but the Tiger defence stood firm.

Then, just before halftime, came one of hockey's oldest misunderstandings. Two defenders each thought the other had a pass covered. Cricket has "Yours"! as in "Your Catch" Hockey can have the same problem. Redcliffe gratefully accepted the invitation and headed to the sheds with a 1–0 lead.

The second half followed much the same pattern, although this time the Ambush slowly tightened its grip.

The Tiges won Penalty Corner after Penalty Corner, only to find the irrepressible Bliss and the Redcliffe defence in no mood to surrender. Twelve corners came and went, but the equaliser remained elusive.

How do you beat a keeper having one of those afternoons?

Apparently... with a Tomahawk.

In the 63rd minute, Camryn Mathison unleashed an absolute cracker to level the scores at 1–1 and ignite a frantic final seven minutes. Both sides searched desperately for a winner, but neither could land the decisive blow.

The Tiges may reflect on those twelve Penalty Corners, but the bigger picture is impossible to ignore.

They've now taken points off the teams currently sitting first, second and third on the ladder. This Ambush of Tigers is growing in confidence, growing in belief, and looking more and more like a side nobody will want to meet when finals arrive.

As they say in Veigy-Foncenex -les rêves commencent par y croire - Dreams begin by believing.

Yesterday, our Div 1 Men welcomed Redcliffe to TigerTurf.

On paper, the Tiges looked favourites, but Redcliffe arrived with a determined defensive game plan and made Easts earn every opportunity.

For the opening quarter, the visitors frustrated the Tigers with disciplined defence, refusing to give an inch. So the Tiges reached into the toolbox and went to Plan B — Penalty Corners.

It worked a treat.

The first breakthrough finally came in the 17th minute, and once the dam wall cracked, the Tiger Machine found another gear. Slick ball movement, relentless pressure and clinical finishing produced a steady stream of goals as the match unfolded.

Ryan Hammond enjoyed a day out in front of goal, troubling the scorekeeper on four occasions — three from Penalty Corners — while somehow managing to stay completely off the umpires' radar. A tidy day's work.

As they say in Veigy-Foncenex, l'appétit vient en mangeant — the appetite grows with eating. Once the Tigers found the first goal, they were hungry for more — eight more, in fact.

Brisbane Hockey Hockey Queensland Redcliffe Hockey Club

The Div 1 Men took on the Bulimba Bulls last Saturday down by the river. After a monumentous 6 - 0 win the previous week against Labrador, the Bulls brought our Tigers back to earth.

The Tigers had to come from behind, to finally take the points, with the winning goal in 2 minutes from full-time.

Final Score: 3 - 2

Our Div 1 Easts Ladies were at home last Saturday, and took on Ascot Arana. In a tough game, the ladies equalised with 2 minutres to go.
