Exercising has been a crucial part of my life for the past 25 years, and it has brought about a transformation in me that I never imagined was possible.
Before I started exercising, I had been struggling with depression and as a result, I had developed several bad habits that were leading my life in a negative direction. Within six months of starting, I had become quite fit, running, lifting weights, and feeling fantastic about myself. This was something my life had never had previously and with my new direction in life I joined the army. During my early army days I would pump out up to 1000 pushups in a day.
In 2008, I made the decision to assist people in achieving their fitness goals and improving their self-confidence. As a result, I pursued a career as a personal trainer.
I still enjoy challenging myself to this day. In 2012, with only a few weeks' notice, I completed the 100km Oxfam walk, which made me think about endurance events as something I would like to try. In 2013, I completed my first marathon, and in 2014, I participated in all the Spartan and Tough Mudder events I could while training at a CrossFit gym.
My love for obstacle racing has continued, and in the last three years, I have placed on the podium at four age group Spartan events. In 2021, I paced for a friend doing a 100km ultra for the last 40km, which made me think about how I wanted to try it nine years ago. So, in 2022, I completed the same race. It was a thrilling experience, and since then, I have completed two more ultras.
I hope that anyone reading this knows that they can change their life by deciding to exercise, just as I have and perhaps the results will surprise you!

A recent study has discovered that running can be as effective as conventional antidepressant medications in alleviating symptoms of depression. Furthermore, individuals who engaged in running experienced improved physical health compared to non-runners.

Involving 141 participants with depression, the study offered a choice between two 16-week therapy interventions: group running sessions at least twice a week (96 participants), or traditional antidepressant medication (45 participants). Both mental and physical health assessments were conducted before and after the interventions.

Remarkably, both therapies exhibited comparable outcomes in terms of reducing depressive symptoms. Nevertheless, the running therapy notably enhanced various aspects of the participants’ overall health, including body weight, waist size, blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rate variability. These improvements were not seen in the antidepressant group.

Of course, it is challenging to generalize the findings of this study and others like it to all people living with depression - which is a mutltifactorial disease with different severities. With nearly 25 million adults in the United States relying on some form of antidepressant medication, it is encouraging that some of those individuals may find moderate-to-vigorous exercise may be comparable to antidepressants but with added health benefits to also improve long-term health.

One of the main reasons I exercise is because of the brain benefits and the effects on my mood an anxiety but I do not have depression. It is encouraging and exciting that moderate to vigorous exercise also seems to improve mood and anxiety in some people living with depression.

Are you keen to participate in Spartan Races? But not sure how to get started?

Then join Triple F Tribe: a 6 week training group program set up specifically for first time racers or those new to Obstacle Course Racing who would like to get ready for the 5km sprint at Spartan Gold coast event on May 27th.

Train with likeminded people, build fitness levels, learn how to tackle the obstacles and prepare your body for the 5km sprint race day! 💪🏻

The sprint is a 5km obstacle course which is an open event that doesn’t penalise athletes for opting out or/ failing obstacles - you can even help each other on the obstacles. It's a brilliant, fun team building event and a fantastic opportunity to experience what Spartan racing is all about.

At the end of the 6 weeks, we will all attempt the 5km sprint together and won’t leave anyone behind (although those who are confident can run ahead).

Limited spots available. 🔥🔥

The future is not in your control. What's in your control is your ability to continue your journey, step by step, learning and growing as you progress - and getting back on track whenever you wander. Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.
