I just got off a phone call with an incredible woman who works in construction. We were each chatting about our plans for 2024 and she said to me “let me send you some names of people I think you should contact so you can share what you do.”
“Thank you, that’s very kind” I said.
“Of course! That’s what we women need to do, support each other. If we’re going to change this industry we have to back each other”, she replied.
This convo absolutely made me heart swell! There is nothing I love more than . You often hear negative comments and lamentations about the “boys club”, but I have a secret… I think it’s a very successful system. Whilst at times we may want to dismantle the “club” I actually think energy is better spent leveraging the proven system. So here are my top 5 tips:
1. If you’re in a position of power, look around at the women you can lift up with you.
2. How do you promote the work of your female friends, what rooms do you drop their names?
3. How are you building and expanding your network of women in industry to create cross company and cross industry connections?
4. Get strategic about who you’re asking to be your mentor. You get the benefits of a mentor, but consider that you also influence the views and beliefs of your mentor… who might need some covert educating?
5. Consider how you can influence the environment around you just by being present. What behavioural standards do you set and except? Do you put your hand up for projects, new roles? Are you keeping your eyes out for opportunities you can refer your female friends too?

Here’s a tip… if you want to run a session in your male dominated workplace to show you support women, don’t just invite the handful of women from across the business, order in a few plates of sandwiches and slices and have a chat.
You’re preaching to the converted. They get it. They live the challenges daily. They know the business case implicitly.
What you really need is to ensure your senior managers and leaders are in attendance. And if you’re struggling to figure out who to invite, start with those who “don’t think there’s an issue”, who are “too busy” to attend, who think “women aren’t suited for certain roles” and that we shouldn’t invest in women’s development because “they’ll just go off and have babies”.
If you’re passionate about creating change in an industry that benefits all, we have to engage the diverse views of people from the entire workplace.

Building a regular practice of mindfulness has wide ranging benefits, from better work performance to improved health outcomes.
It’s an incredible technique that can be done in many ways. Some involve carving out time in your day, whilst others can be integrated into your existing routines.
