Do you struggle to lock out your deadlift?

Here are two contributing factors why.

You are applying force in the wrong direction by…

1- By not being in your centre of mass and having your body mass unevenly distributed over the bar.

2- Wedging too fast or hard and pushing the bar forward which causes it to pendulum forward.

3- Rolling the bar towards yourself which then creates a pendulum motion with force being applied in the opposite direction.

To create the straightest line of force we must make sure the bar is at a standstill motion.

This allows you to create force in the necessary direction.

Justen started coaching with Mat in early 2022.

In his time with Rivercity, Justen competed 8 times, over a two-and-a-half-year period across three different feds.

Winning four out of the eight competitions and placing in the 3 others.

Justen put 70 kg on his total while working with Mat for coaching, his biggest total in this time was 685kf.

His biggest lifts were squat 245kg, bench press 190kg and deadlift 250kg.

He also benched 195 kg in training.

Justen is one the hardest working athletes I have worked with, always puts in 100% and does everything to the best of his ability.

Lee Musgrave started coaching in September 2022 with Mat.

Lee had recently competed in the April Tested national and was looking for coaching in the Ipl Worlds.

Lee worked hard in the world, she is one the hardest workers in the gym.

In her first-ever prep with Mat, Lee added 32.5 kg to her total and came 3rd at Ipl Worlds.

If you go back to some of our past posts and podcasts together you can hear Lee’s story which is one I am very proud of her for still pushing through.

After Worlds, we had some health things that needed attention so Lee took it pretty easy for a few months.

Then to come back and win APL tested national in 2023 with a huge total of 457.5 kg.

She went on later that year to pull 200 kg at a deadlift meet and to squat 200 kg in the gym.

Lee is one the strongest women I’ve worked with and she continues to push her boundaries in strength.

She has gone up a weight class and focusing on pushing her number up this year.

Well done lee your an inspiration to our team and everyone around you.

Natalie Quinn started coaching with Mat and Nutrition with Zoe in September 2022.

Natalie had recently bombed out on her squats at national that year and wanted to redeem herself in powerlifting.

What came next left a mark in powerlifting history books.

Mat and Zoe worked closely with Natalie for 6 months so we could get the very best out of her lifting in 2023.

She did her first competition in January 2023, winning the comp in her weight class and taking 2 records.

She totals 402.5kg adding 50kg to her total and going 9/9 lifts which gave her an invite to Apl tested national 2023.

This is where Natalie shows the world what she was she could do.

Natalie went to tested national and won the juniors and came second in the opens.

She added 22.5 kg to her total, which meant she had added 75 kg to her total in 12 months.

She also pulled the first junior female 200kf deadlift in APL and rivercity barbell.

In such a short time Natalie left a huge mark on the platform and achieved so much in her training well done nat we are proud of you.

Deyana started coaching with Mat and Zoe in 2022 13 weeks out from Apl nationals.

Our goal was to place at Apl national and she ended up pulling the final deadlift to win with a sneaky card play by Mat on her final deadlift that gave her a 2.5kg win.

That was just the beginning of what was to come from Dee.

In the past 3 years, Dee has competed 12 times placing 1st in 6 of them competitions and second place 5 times.

Deyana has the drive to improve and be better in every competition, she is always pushing herself to be the best athlete she can be both in the gym and her nutrition.

She has competed at every level of competition, local, national, world, zerow pro and pro raw placing at every single event.

In our time working together, we have put 47.5 kg on Teyana total (447.5kg) and she has lost 10kg in body weight.

I can’t wait to see what she does in the coming 12 months in her training as she is an amazing lifter to see compete.

Tristan started coaching in late 2022 with Mat as his coach.

We set a goal for competition 4 months later on the Sunshine Coast in Capo.

Tristan put up a PB total and won the competition on dots, everything else was history.

Competition after competition in some way he has made progress in his total, a lift or mental capacity to push harder in the gym.

At his second competition in 2023, Tristan put 180kg on his total in 12 month period totalling 780 in sleeves.

Tristan is competing in Zerow Pro 2 in wraps in October can’t wait to see what he brings to the platform.

Mat Holt started working with Mat and Zoe in february 2023.

Mat is hard-working both in the gym and out of the gym in his nutrition.

He also works long hours in manual labour jobs and still turns up every week applying himself to the best he can.

In 12 months of coaching and nutrition with Rivercity Barbell Mat added 100 Kg to his total on the platform totaling 715 in his last competition.

Mat did a cut into both competitions with Zoe’s guidance, he made weight each comp with no water cuts or too much food manipulation that interfered with his prep.

Mat achieved goal that we set together and worked hard to get there.

I am proud of Mat and everything he achieved on the platform.

Tomas Wright started working with Mat for coaching and Zoe for nutrition in September 2023.

During this time, Tom has achieved some big goals on the platform and also with his body composition.

When we met Tom his goal was to cut body weight down into the 100 KG weight class and still is getting stronger.

11 Months later working with Zoe and Tom is down 15.6 Kg in body weight and put up a 615 Kg Pb total at that body weight.

This is just the beginning of Tom’s journey with Rivercity Barbell, he competes again in November.

By the look of the data it will be his best competition yet.

Well done Tom for all your hard work.
