Multi Terrain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) is the sport of cross country cycling, combining riding and navigation.

Using specially produced maps, riders navigate their way along roads, tracks and trails to control markers (checkpoints) placed at specific locations. Courses are available to suit riders of all abilities, from social to competitive. MTBO events are a low-key and fun competition and are open to anyone to try.

🔥 Rider Profile: Joel Young (Multi Terrain Bike Orienteers, QLD) 🔥

Joel Young is no stranger to MTBO – he’s been racing for 18 years, ever since his parents first got him hooked. A former Australian MTBO representative and World Champs competitor, Joel brings serious experience into what’s shaping up to be a competitive M21 field.

He’ll be lining up against current Australian rep Will Whittington, the ever-strong Ricky Thackray, plus locals with speed and terrain advantage like Hadrien Devillepoix, Nigel Wade, and Trent Siviour. Expect sparks to fly from the very first start punch.

💬 Joel’s MTBO in his own words:

Best MTBO tip for new riders: “Go a bit slower, you make silly mistakes when you’re knackered.”

Favorite type of terrain: Urban sprint – fast, technical, and flowy.

Biggest goal for Aus Champs 2025: “No f**-ups 😊.”*

Fun fact: Joel once appeared on the game show Now You See It as a kid. His school won, though he swears it wasn’t thanks to him!

After nearly two decades of racing, Joel knows the thrill of finding flow at speed – but with such a stacked men’s field, he’ll need every ounce of that flow to chase down podium chances in Collie.
