Did you know that all of the movement that happens from playing golf for 18 holes (walking between shots included) reportedly places more stress on the knees than jogging a similar distance?

When you think about golf courses, it is rare to find one that's flat and carrying around golf bags can add a lot of extra weight to your body. Add in how much your knees are used when you're playing the game and you get a sense of how much strain there is on the knees in a round of golf.

It's important to ensure before, after and during games you stretch and warm up the knees to help prevent injury. If they are not in good condition, we advise you speak with your Sports and Exercise or Golf trained Health Professional to assess the injury and determine a game plan for recovery.

Do you love a good game of golf and are looking to improve your performance?

There are many helpful exercises that you can do to improve your technique and decrease your risk of injury. V sit medicine ball rotations are one of our favourites because of the benefits to your core and upper body. This is a great exercise to help improve the flexibility of your torso and refine the muscles needed for a shoulder turn (when you swing).

How might we make drills more applicable for the golfer and thus useful for range sessions or warm ups?

The goal of all exercise interventions is not to have them completed in treatment sessions or the gym ONLY. It is essential that options should be ‘carried over’ to the golf swing. Thus the exercises need to be applicable to warm-up content, on the range and wherever possible to be as golf specific as possible.
