To herself, though, she proved something much more important. She has made it through the first phase without giving in to fear and, more importantly, with that same kind of enjoyment she used to find in tennis.
For her, that is enough to digest...

It was more of an endurance contest than a tennis match. Possibly the best doubles final ever played on the lawns here, it offered nearly flawless tennis for a minute more than 5 hours.

Forget about aces. Or double faults. Or even unforced errors. The most telling stat apparently is how much noise Seles apparently makes (not much), and how distracting it is to the opposition (not really).
Listen to Navratilova after she lost to Seles, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
"It just gets louder and louder," fourth seed Navratilova, 35, said after seeing her chance at a 10th title denied. "You can not hear the ball being hit. If you judge by the noise that is emanating from the other side of the court, the ball should be coming over pretty hard. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't."
Listen to Seles after she advanced to her first Wimbledon final.

There were McEnroe and Connors, the two biggest names in the game, playing an Open semifinal in prime time on a perfect Saturday night in early September ... in a half-empty stadium.
Not that it affected John McEnroe or Jimmy Connors...

Seles acknowledged that she had learned a lot in 1991. She learned she could win a second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, to go with last year's breakthrough at the French Open. And she learned she could successfully defend a title, as she did in Paris. The harder lesson came when public sentiment turned against her. "I learned when you are Number One, how much weight your words have," she said. "People misunderstood me. You learn that you can never be smart enough. And you can't just blurt words out..."
..wise words indeed, from an already tremendous champion.

By the time they walked off the court, tired and emotionally spent after 2 hours 43 minutes of rough-and-tumble tennis, neither would forget what had transpired on Center Court.
Seles won her third consecutive French Open title by outlasting Graf, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, in a match with enough theater for a Shakespeare festival.
The third set kept the 16,500 Center Court fans on edge for 91 minutes, as much for its emotional swings as its brilliant action.

Cheered by a partisan crowd on a nearly packed Center Court with the roof closed because of drizzle, Halard traded baseline rallies and rushed the net to pressure the Yugoslav-born Florida resident at every opportunity.
