What a great idea from our North Lakes Hawks Basketball Club. What rules confuse you that we can help out with?
Welcome to Hawks Hoop IQ!
Whether you are a player, a parent cheering from the sidelines, or a volunteer coach stepping up to help, basketball moves fast, and the rulebook can sometimes feel like a completely different language.
To help everyone in our community get a better grip on the game, we are launching Hawks Hoop IQ, a weekly series breaking down basketball rules, terminology, and court mechanics in a simple, fun way.
Up first: a rule you'll see referees counting out every single game.
Hawks Hoop IQ: The 5-Second Inbound Rule
Did you know a player has exactly 5 seconds to pass it into the court?
The 5-second inbound rule keeps the game moving and prevents teams from stalling. The count begins the moment the referee places the ball at the disposal of the player out-of-bounds (usually by handing or bouncing it to them). To avoid a violation, the ball must leave the inbounder's hands before the 5 seconds expire. If it doesn't, the referee blows the whistle, signals a 5-second violation, and the opposing team is awarded the ball at that same spot.
Next game, watch the referee standing near the inbounder, you will see them counting down the seconds using a visible, chopping hand motion!
Bonus Tip: Defensive pressure is huge here! If our defenders play tight "deny" defense on the open players, the passer won't have anyone to throw to, forcing a 5-second turnover without us even touching the ball.
Hoop IQ Breakdown: What Do These Words Mean?
- Inbound (Throw-In): The method of putting the ball into play from out-of-bounds after a basket is made, a violation occurs, or play is stopped.
- At the Disposal of: A referee's term meaning the ball is officially ready to be played. This happens when the referee hands or bounces the ball to the inbounder, or when the player picks it up from the floor at the designated spot.
- Out-of-Bounds: The area outside the court boundary lines. The lines themselves (sidelines and baselines) are considered out-of-bounds.
- Violation: A minor rule infraction that stops the clock and results in a turnover, giving the ball to the opponent for a new throw-in. It does not count as a personal foul against the player.
Stay tuned for Hoop IQ next week! Brought to you by our U18s Coordinator, Shane Bear.
Thank you Shane, what a great initiative!

Itโs National Volunteers Week, and weโre celebrating the incredible people who support the Timberwolves Basketball Club. ๐๐ค๐บ
As a 100% volunteer-run club, everything we do is made possible by the people who generously give their time, energy and talents to our community.
From coaching and team managing to sorting uniforms, scoring games, setting up and helping behind the scenes, every contribution matters, and every volunteer makes a difference.
Volunteering is more than giving your time. It creates connection, purpose, and stronger communities, and weโre so grateful for the amazing people who help make our club what it is.
Thank you for everything you do. We celebrate you this week and every week. ๐
