This is THE best lure.

This is the reality of fishing in my local waterway, Moreton Bay.

It's basically at a point where the moment after you hook up, you don't worry about your knots, your hooks or if that fish is going to bust you off.

The first thought - Are there sharks behind it?

This Snapper was caught on a wreck and usually this time of year the sharks aren't a concern.

It wasn't drawn out fight, I had it on for about a minute before it was eaten at the boat.

It is getting worse. What can be done?

If there is one tip I can give you today, make sure your sounder is picking up spots at speed. That means the transducer is set up right and your settings are tuned in!

When it comes to sidescan, there is one setting you HAVE to adjust.

Spotlock could be costing you fish!

Stealth is the name of the game and constantly running your electric motor is giving away your presence. Even though the fish may not spook, they are aware that you are there and are less likely to bite. Especially the bigger ones. (The smaller fish are easier to fool)

Use the wind, a drift anchor, or powerpoles to control your boats movement and be as quiet as possible.

Lets take a look at this split screen shot taken from my Lowrance Sounder.

1 -Theres a couple of decent sized fish out to the right that we just went past. Given the location (Gold Coast) they could really be anything, my guess would be Jew or Trevally around 50-60cm long.

2 - BREAM. Lots of Bream! It was winter and they were schooled up all around this bridge, we actually caught quite a few, throwing lightly weighted lures up around the Pylons. Each little white "dash" is a Bream. You can see they are mostly bunched in the darker area around the pylon, where it drops off slightly compared to the surrounding area.

3 - SHADOW. - The shadow behind the pylons go all the way to the edge of the screen, this tells us that the structure goes all the way up the water column. Obvious when we can physically see the pylons, but when we can't see the structure, the length of the shadow is a great way to guage the height from an otherwise flat image.

4- A bit hard to see and tricky to ID but my guess is there is some additional structure laying down here, it COULD interpreted as large fish but that size would make it well over a meter long and whilst its possible, I'm thinking unlikely in this scenario. (it also didn't move while I was there so theres that..)

5 - Far right side pylons, also holding bream just as the left. Again, sitting in the darker drop offs.

Clear readings at speed = new spots!

Setting up your sounder to read clear while moving between spots is a great way to find new ground.

Always travel slightly different paths, covering new ground each time you head out. This way you increase chances of finding something special.
