Hello everyone! I am Bec, triathlon coach, IRONMAN athlete, and the person behind Be The Fear.
Welcome to all those who are new here.
I thought it might be time again to post about me outside of coaching tips and inspiration.
When I am not writing training plans or coaching my athletes, I am probably reading a fantasy novel (currently the Magic After Midlife series) or playing a video game (currently Jedi: Survivor - thank you Steam sale).
I recently joined the local library - something I haven't done since I was a kid, because I don't have enough book space in my house. Which is why I also have an eReader on my wish list.
I have three beautiful dogs:
Fenrir (named from Norse mythology)
Hopper (named from the Wheel of Time)
Amari (not named by us, but it can mean Moon, so we kept it for the wolf theme).
And once a month or so I play D&D with friends. Very slowly we are going to take on Vecna because scheduling as adults is the real difficulty.
If any of this sounds like your kind of person, feel free to say hi in the comments. 👋

I have the best job being part of these athletes triathlon achievements.
It makes me so proud seeing how much my athletes grow and become stronger in pursuit of their goals.
This feedback always makes me smile 😃

You've signed up. You're a mix of excitement and anxiety. And now you're sitting there wondering "where do I actually start?"
That's one of the most common things I hear from first-time 70.3 athletes. They've committed to the race, but figuring out everything from training sessions to nutrition to required race gear feels overwhelming before it's even begun.
If you're racing IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast (September), IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie (October), IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne (November), or IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia 70.3 (December) - and this is your first time - now is the time to get your preparation sorted.
I work with athletes from all backgrounds and experience levels, building training around real life.
If you want to arrive at your first 70.3 start line prepared, confident, and knowing exactly what to expect, I'd love to help.

The morning of my first 70.3 Sunshine Coast, I watched the lifesavers struggling to get the buoys out past the waves in their inflatable boats.
I was standing on the beach with my family and said out loud: "Well, no matter what happens today, I made it to the start line."
I was in the third swim zone. I watched the athletes ahead of me getting swallowed by the breakers. Some of them didn't make it through at all...
I'd spent weekends practicing beach entries at this exact beach. Nothing I'd practiced looked like this.
The swell was massive. I couldn't see the waves coming whilst swimming freestyle to prepare myself for them and not get pushed back. I started breaststroke before I even made it through the breakers. I needed to see the waves coming — and it worked. I got through.
Once I got through the breakers, I found myself still going up and then dropping into air. It was disorientating.
So I kept switching strokes. Freestyle when I could. Breaststroke when I needed to sight, breathe, or just settle myself down.
I finished that swim feeling like I'd survived something.
As I ran past my mum on the way to T1, I called out: "I made it!"
My family told me after the race that a lot of athletes didn't get past the waves at all.
There is no rule that says you have to freestyle the whole way.
Breaststroke to sight a buoy. Breaststroke to cough up water. Breaststroke to breathe and reset — whatever you need.
It doesn't mean you failed. It means you're doing what the race requires. We practice the open water before race day. On race day, you use whatever gets you to that finish line.
You can do hard things 💪 Let's make sure you're prepared for them.

Good luck Matt at his first triathlon ! =)
Ever wondered what the difference between a triathlon cycling shoe and a road cycling shoe is?
The two big differences are:
A loop attached to the heel of the triathlon shoe
The triathlon shoe opens wider and has divots in the strap to hold the shoe open.
These two features allow you to mount the shoe onto the bike in a horizontal position (with the aid of rubber bands) and keep the shoe open wide enough to easily slip your foot in for a faster mount.
If you want to do this for your next triathlon, please practice it before race day so you have the confidence to put your shoes on whilst moving forward.
