Tigist Assefa has won the 2026 Berlin Marathon in a phenomenal time of 2:11:04, delivering yet another historic performance on the streets of Germany.
Assefa went aggressively after Ruth Chepngetich's world record of 2:09:56 (set at Chicago in 2024). She crossed the half-marathon mark at a blistering 64:57 and remained well under world-record pace through 35km (1:47:32) and even up to 40km.

Over the final two kilometers, an apparent leg injury or severe cramping caused her to visibly limp. Her final 2.2km split slowed to 8:04 (her slowest of the day by over 30 seconds per kilometer), taking the world record out of reach.

Despite the painful finish, Assefa still crossed the line nearly six minutes ahead of her closest competitor to secure her third career victory in Berlin. Her 2:11:04 mark stands as a new personal best and shatters her own previous Berlin course record of 2:11:53 from 2023.

Following the Brussels Diamond League, Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen criticized the field as "cowards" after finishing fourth in the 1500m final and alleged that rival Cole Hocker manipulated race dynamics by swapping a pacemaker for a teammate.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen went completely unfiltered following a dramatic, physical 1500m race at the Brussels Diamond League Final, blasting his competitors as "a bunch of cowards" during a fiery post-race interview.

The race descended into chaos during the final lap with heavy pushing, shoving, and kicking. Ingebrigtsen, who led for a large chunk of the race, ultimately ended up on the track diving across the line to take fourth place in a season's-best 3:30.52. Australia's Cameron Myers won the thriller in 3:30.14, while Olympic champion Cole Hocker faded to seventh.
Appearing on FloTrack's Athlete's Lounge to reflect on the race, the Norwegian did not hold back his frustration regarding the tactical choices of the pack:

"I’m disappointed with the race and the results, racing against a bunch of cowards but that’s the way it is," Ingebrigtsen said. "Everyone is racing to win but there is a little bit of honour in terms of how you win. So it was only Cameron who ran a good race. Everyone else looks like a loser, myself included."

He also claimed that Cole Hocker had the pre-race pacemaking instructions altered to suit his own strategy before his wife stepped in to pull him away for his post-race warm-down.

Despite the frustration, the performance marks another step forward in his grueling comeback from a year-long Achilles injury. Next up, he heads to Budapest for a highly anticipated 1500m showdown against rival Josh Kerr at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship on September 13

It was a gritty race from Tharp and the rest of the field, but ultimately Tharp is able to sneak away from the field over the last two hurdles to win the Diamond Trophy in the 110mH. He goes 13.03 (-0.2).
Jamal Britt and Trey Cunningham round out the podium as they run 13.09 and 13.22, respectively.

In second Phanuel Koech collects runs 3:30.18 and earns the final spot in the World Ultimate Championship by virtue of being the highest finisher not already qualified for the World Ultimate Championship.
