The impetus for developing Juggernaut chainrings arose after completing the Aiolos crankset, when I sought chainrings from mainstream brands that would complement it.
.
Initially, I considered aluminium alloy chainrings. However, after researching several popular brands, I found that to reduce weight, the cutout designs significantly compromised strength. Alternatively, the solid chainrings were quite heavy – neither option was ideal.
.
Thus, carbonfiber chainrings became my next choice, especially given the longstanding reputation for their exceptional rigidity and robustness.
However, upon acquiring it, I found myself perplexed. They didn‘t quite live up to my expectations. While comparable to some well-known aluminium alloy chainrings, they were even softer than some cheaper aluminium alloy chainrings that were merely 20-30 grams heavier.
.
Lacking sufficient funds and equipment to develop carbonfiber chainrings myself, I returned to traditional aluminium alloy. I explored whether different design approaches could unlock the potential of this common, familiar material, surpassing the performance and weight-to-strength ratio of current carbon chainrings.
.
Thus, the Juggernaut chainrings were born.
.
Of course, rigidity is merely one of the most easily visualised advantages. The design process also involved optimising the tooth profile to achieve smooth chain engagement and disengagement through mechanical engineering principles alone – without relying on any external low-friction coatings. This sensation required my friend @aqbike to arrange direct testing with athletes. Their feedback confirmed performance surpassing some previous products they’d used – even carbon fibre chainrings.
.
The initial concept was straightforward, yet the journey proved challenging. It always was.
.
ps:My reference chainrings are not counterfeit, but from the authorized dealer.
