Marcus Trescothick, England's opening batsman, served as the team's designated ball shiner. In his 2008 autobiography Coming Back to Me, he revealed that he sucked on Murray Mints during the series to generate sugary saliva, which he applied to the ball. He had experimented with different sweets and found that Murray Mints helped maintain the shine for longer, assisting the swing bowling of players such as Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones.

At the time, the Laws of Cricket permitted only natural saliva for polishing the ball. Using any artificial substance to alter its condition was considered ball tampering. Trescothick described it as a practice common in county cricket and noted a close call at Headingley where mints spilled from his pocket near an umpire but went unnoticed.

The revelation, made years after the series, prompted discussions about hypocrisy, as England had previously criticized other teams, including Pakistan, over ball maintenance issues. No official investigation or sanctions resulted from the admission, and the 2005 series result stands unchanged.
