Kyudo is not just archery—it is a moving meditation where posture, movement, and breath become one.
Every shot follows the Hassetsu (八節)—eight precise steps synchronized with deep abdominal breathing. Hassetsu is the basis of kyudo without it its not Kyudo. Take note it is often one of the first exam questions you will see.
Here is the ultimate sequence for absolute focus:
👣 1. Ashibumi – Set a wide, stable stance. (Inhale/Exhale)
🧘♂️ 2. Dozukuri – Align your spine and settle your weight. (Inhale/Exhale)
🏹 3. Yugamae – Set your bow grip and ready the arrow. (Inhale/Exhale)
🙌 4. Uchiokoshi – Raise the bow smoothly overhead. (Inhale)
🏹 5. Hikiwake – Draw the bow down and apart evenly. (Exhale)
🎯 6. Kai – Hold and expand at peak tension. (Hold/Exhale)
💥 7. Hanare – Release the arrow naturally. (Dynamic Exhale)
👁️ 8. Zanshin – Maintain your form and focus after the shot. (Full Exhale)
See all 8 steps in the official diagram below!
