🌄 A Stunning Weekend in the Flinders Ranges 🌄
Last weekend was an absolutely beautiful time for several of our bushwalking group who headed over to the Flinders Ranges. The weather was kind, the colours were rich, and the whole area felt alive — perfect conditions for exploring one of South Australia’s most remarkable landscapes.
We started with a relaxed 10 km introductory walk through the Wirrabara Forest, an easy route that gave everyone time to enjoy the scenery without rushing. The forest was peaceful and green, with plenty of birdlife and that wonderful cool, earthy smell you only get under tall trees.
One of the highlights was visiting the King Tree, a magnificent red gum estimated to be around 400 years old. Standing beside it really puts time into perspective — generations have come and gone while that tree has quietly watched over the forest. We found a very friendly Goanna as you can see by the photos, such a beautiful specimen that has made its home near the tree.
We wandering through the historic Wirrabara Nursery, established back in the 1860s. It was fascinating to learn how the early foresters worked these ranges, cutting timber for the mines at Burra, Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo. This area also holds the honour of being the site of the first reafforestation project in Australia, a reminder of how long conservation has been part of the story here.
All up, it was a wonderful weekend — gentle walking, rich history, and the kind of scenery that fills your lungs and your spirit. A perfect getaway for our group, and one we’ll definitely be repeating.

Don’t forget that next weekend we’re heading out to Bimbowrie, with a special visit to Old Bullcamatta — a place rich in both pastoral and Aboriginal history.
This area is an absolute treasure trove for anyone who loves geology, culture, or a good wander. Within a 50 km radius you’ll find around 80 different types of minerals, making it one of the most fascinating geological pockets in the region.
We’ll explore the old pastoral sites and take in the rugged beauty that makes Bimbowrie such a standout destination for our group.
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic trip — a mix of history, scenery, and discovery. Looking forward to seeing everyone there! 🌾✨

OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND TRIP TO THE CENTRAL FLINDERS RANGES SA.
Camping & Bush Walking
Saturday 3rd to Monday 5th October 2026.
TRIP LEADER:- Wolf Leyh CONTACT:- Mobile 0417 043 227.
DISTANCE: One way approximately 470km. Good bitumen & minimal good dirt roads.
RETURN: - Most will very likely return on Monday, just after lunch, aiming to get back to Broken Hill around dark.
VEHICLES: Conventional vehicles are OK if they have reasonable clearance. Depending on the numbers some shared transport may possibly be arranged but this will need to be finalized with me by latest Wednesday 30th September.
SUITABILITY: Easy to moderate walking depending upon fitness and ability.
WHAT: - Camp out in lovely natural surroundings next to cars & attractive gum lined creek. Explore some of the best and most scenic outback country in Australia i.e. A very beautiful part of the Central Flinders Ranges not too far away.
THE WALKS: Day walk Sunday. Varying from 6 to 10km approx. The longer day walk will be mostly off tracks, i.e. Cross-country via pleasant sandy & rocky creek beds as well as locally up and down intermittent rocky spurs leading to easier spectacular ridge lines but this will be at suitably slow and safe pace. * However, alternate self-guided, easier/ shorter walking, e.g. family groups can be organised.
BRING: All your food for the trip but you WILL NEED TO BUY ANY FRUIT & VEGIES IN PETERBOROUGH where we will stop enroute as we may have to pass through the fruit fly checkpoint at Oodlawirra. Bring or borrow a suitable tent, sleeping bags or a swag or sleep in your car or high clearance van. Camping & cooking & eating utensils, frypan, billy, a torch + spare batteries, plates, cups, etc. Water for yourselves. Some limited drinking water is available at the station in emergency only. Toilet paper- Good long drop bush toilet available next to campsite. For one day walk, allow at least. 2-2.5 litres/day per person. An icebox will probably last two days in the shade with fridge-frozen water bottles or block ice if kept outside of a vehicle. Otherwise wrap all fruit & meat & other perishables in paper don't keep this in plastic as it will go off much quicker if warm.
WALKING:- Good comfortable preferably fairly sturdy walking shoes or light weight boots ideal as some rocky ground will be traversed. Sun Hat. Need sunscreen, lip balm, fly repellent or fly mesh if preferred. Light weight breathable shirt/top. Weather could be slightly warm. However, just in case, if weather turns cold and windy or we have to spend an emergency night out for some reason on the longer more difficult walk *** Prefer you each carry light weight wind/rain cheater and extra warm top. Gaiters or long pants will be helpful for some scrubby areas which will probably be encountered.
DAY WALK PACK: Small to medium sized Day Pack, well-sealed water bottles, pocket knife, matches, small light weight torch + spare batteries, small personal first aid kit on walk to cater for minor injuries. Principal day walking group will be carrying a first aid kit.
WALK LUNCHES: Suggest high energy food e.g. nuts, dried fruit, food bars, solid fruit e.g. oranges, apples, small tinned fish, tinned or dried meat, hard cheese, black chocolate, snacks, crackers, rolls, bread, etc, small billy, cup for tea or coffee stops. You can also make up sandwiches for each day at camp if you prefer.
DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA! Looking forward to your company & some great bush walking in some of the best country that Australia has to offer.

🌿 HALF‑DAY WALK – SOUTH BROKEN HILL COMMON 🌿
Sunday 27th – 8:30am start

Next Sunday I’ll be leading a short half‑day walk in the South Broken Hill Common. The route includes a mix of rocky hills and flat dirt tracks, so there’s something for everyone.

The country is looking absolutely spectacular right now, with thick undergrowth in places. Please wear long pants, sturdy boots, and your usual sun protection.
Bring a cup for billy tea, water, and your own nibbles for the rest stops.

📍 Meeting point: Usual spot – carpark opposite Toyota
⏰ Time: 8:30am

If you have any questions, feel free to give Ann a ring on 0438 939 242.

We had a great walk yesterday out at Iron Blow. This route hasn’t been done for a number of years, so it was nice to revisit it. Wolf led our group of six on an easy, enjoyable wander through the area.

Ben took on the navigation and guided us to the open‑cut mine without too much trouble. We followed the pipeline for a while, walked through beautiful mulga country, listened to the birds, and admired how green everything is looking.

Lunch was a billy and a good explore around the old settlement ruins. On the way back, Claudia took over navigation and brought us safely back to the cars.

We finished the day at the Mt Gipps Resort Hotel with a well‑earned beverage before heading back to Broken Hill.

🌞 Saturday gifted us one of those perfect walking days — bright sun, gentle wind, and the countryside showing off its best colours.

🚗 We drove out of Broken Hill to Wilangee Rd and followed the creek bed to the old ruins, exploring what’s left (it’s always the fireplaces that seem to survive the years).

🏚️ Crossing the creek, we wandered through the remains of the tiny village, then climbed the hill opposite to find the unmarked graves outlined in stone — quiet, simple, and full of history.

🍵 Lunch was a relaxed billy in the creek bed with good company and plenty of chatter.

🍻 And of course, we finished the day at the Silverton Pub — the perfect ending to a lovely outing.

Thanks Boris and Wolf for sharing your photos.
