How often should you clean your sails?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, however a yacht sailing every weekend in salt-heavy conditions will usually need cleaning more regularly than a boat used occasionally in freshwater.
Things that speed up sail wear include:
*Salt build-up
*UV exposure
*Mildew and moisture
*Pollution and grime
*Long-term storage while damp
Regular cleaning helps extend the life of your investment while keeping sails easier to handle and store.

Whale watching season is underway 🐋⛵
Every year, more than 60,000 humpback whales migrate along Australia’s east coast, creating one of the world’s most spectacular marine migrations.
From May to November, sailors and boaters can witness the famous “Humpback Highway” come to life, with sightings increasing through winter and into spring.
From Byron Bay and Port Stephens to Sydney, Jervis Bay and the Sapphire Coast, humpbacks are now making their way north and are often spotted surprisingly close to shore.
There’s nothing quite like seeing a whale surface beside your boat.
If you’re lucky enough to be heading out this winter, remember to follow the safe distance rules when whale watching from a yacht or boat:
🐳 Stay at least 100m from adult whales
🐳 Stay 300m from whales with calves
🐳 Slow down within the caution zone
🐳 Never block a whale’s path

Not all sails can be cleaned the same way.
Lightweight nylon spinnakers need a far gentler approach than standard sails, which is why Vacuwash uses a specialised overnight “spa” treatment instead of the regular vacuum tank cleaning process.
This tailored cleaning method helps remove salt, dirt and grime while protecting delicate nylon fabrics and preserving sail performance.
Because your spinnaker deserves specialist care too.

Winter is almost here ❄️⛵
While many boats in the Northern Hemisphere are pulled out of icy water for winter, here in Australia most boats stay on their moorings year-round, exposed to UV, salt, moisture and pollution.
And when we spend less time sailing over winter, maintenance often gets pushed aside too.
But leaving sails and canvas sitting untreated through the colder months can quietly speed up ageing, mildew growth and fabric deterioration.
That’s why sailmakers recommend regular sail washing, and many canvas manufacturers include regular cleaning as part of their warranty requirements.
Even sails and canvas that look clean can hold an incredible amount of hidden salt, dirt and contaminants. You only have to see the rinse water from a “clean” sail to realise how much grime builds up over time.
The good news? We make it easy.
Vacuwash can remove your sails and canvas, professionally clean and treat them, then reinstall them when you’re ready to hit the water again.
Less hassle for you.
Better protection for your boat.
One less thing to worry about this winter.

Did you know?
Salt left sitting in your sails and canvas slowly breaks fibres down over time.
Even if your sails look clean, salt crystals remain trapped deep inside the fabric, attracting moisture and speeding up wear.
That stiff, crunchy feeling? That’s salt damage starting to take hold.
A professional clean helps remove salt, dirt and contaminants from deep within the fibres, helping your sails last longer, perform better and store more safely between adventures.
