Growing pains... what's normal, and what really isn't. πŸ€”

'Growing pains' is one of those phrases we all grew up with. Some of it is real. Some of it isn't.

What's usually normal: mild aches in the calves or thighs, mostly in the evening or overnight, in kids ages 3-12. Comes and goes. No limping.

What isn't just growing pains: heel pain during or after sports (Sever's disease). Persistent limping. One-sided pain. Pain that stops your kids participating. Pain in the joints themselves (not the muscles). πŸ˜₯

If your kids has any of the second list... it's worth an appointment.

'Does it hurt??'...The question we get asked more than any other. πŸ€”

The honest answer: the injection stings for 10 seconds. That's it.

After the local anesthetic kicks in, you feel pressure but not pain. Most patients spend the procedure making conversation, scrolling their phone, or dozing off. πŸ˜ƒ

The evening after? Some mild ache. Panadol handles it comfortably for most people. Compared to the years of pain most patients have put up with before booking... its laughable.πŸ˜…

If pain is the reason you've been avoiding coming in for anything (nails, warts, procedures, biomechanical work)... this is us saying: it's not what you're imagining.

DM us your specific worry!

What a Partial Nail Avulsion actually feels like... from someone who's had one. πŸ‘£

The most common thing patients say after their PNA: 'That was so much easier than I expected.' πŸ˜ƒ

Here's what actually happens.
Local anesthetic injections...the only uncomfortable moment. Feels like a firm sting for about 10 seconds. We wait a couple of minutes for it to work. You'll feel pressure but no pain from here on.
We remove just the offending edge of the nail... usually 1-2mm wide.
Phenolisation of the matrix.. this is what makes it permanent.

Dressing on. Home. Total appointments: about 60 minutes.

You'll change the dressing daily for 2-4 weeks. Most people are back in enclosed shoes within days. πŸ™Œ

60 seconds.. This test might explain years of pain.

Stand up. Look down at your feet... don't adjust them. πŸ‘£

3 things:
1. Where's your weight? Inside edge? Outside? Even?
2. In a mirror... are your knees pointing straight forward, or slightly inward?
3. Sole of the shoes you're wearing right now... even wear, or more on 1 side?

2 or 3 out of 3 where 'something looks off'... your feet are very likely contributing to the pain you've been carrying upstream. πŸ˜₯

Not proof.. but a strong signal. ⚠

Shin splints aren't just from running too much. πŸƒ

Common myth: rest is the answer to shin splints.
Reality: rest settles them. It rarely fixes what caused them. πŸ˜₯

Most shin splints we see are driven by 1 of 3 things: rapid increase in training load, footwear that's too old or wrong for the runner, or a biomechanical issue at the foot that's creating uneven loading up the shin.

If you rest, it settles. You start again. It comes back.

The permanent fix is identifying which of the 3 (or more likely, which combination) is driving it... and addressing that specifically.πŸ‘£
