Now that we are coming into the winter months, it is important to create a plan of attack for the next months to ensure that we don’t fall into the trap of not training for these important months.

Many plans could include:

1. Buying wet weather gear in case of long periods of rain
2. Planning in advance for when the best times would be to run
3. Investing in a gym membership to use the treadmills for runs

It is always important to plan for these months so that you aren’t caught out and scrambling trying to figure out what to do during this time.

This is a reminder to ensure that you are fuelling for performance.

Too often l see people training who don’t eat enough or who aren’t eating the right things to ensure the best results.

I always imagine my body as a car, and when l am eating food l am only wanting to put the most premium fuel into my body, just like you wouldn’t put diesel fuel in a car that takes unleaded!

It is also important if within budget, to see a chiropractor from time to time, as our bodies are always changing and adjusting.

If you have a job which requires a lot of sitting down for example, it is possible to have neck and back problems from the lack of movement.

I personally, have seen a chiropractor on a regular basis to ensure that my posture and my joints are moving correctly and as they should.

Chiropractors may also be just the thing you need to help with gut issues as well!

Physiotherapists are a great service which provides therapy for injuries in many different sports.

It is important to see a physio after an injury or if you feel as though an injury is coming on so that they can effectively diagnose and solve the problem you are having.

Most physio’s will be able to prescribe different exercises to help with pain and to strengthen the muscles which have been injured

As a running coach and personal trainer, l pride myself on continuing to train and to learn to expand my knowledge in the industry.

While being an accredited coach with Athletics Australia l have the opportunity to do courses to learn more about the sport and service l provide.

After months of training, l am now able to say that l have obtained enough points from courses to be an Athletics Australia Gold Coach, solidifying my value of always wanting to learn more.

This post isn’t necessarily a gloat, as much as l am proud of this achievement it is a post to ensure athletes who read this if they are training with me during this time or in the future know that l am continuously expanding my knowledge to ensure that l provide the best service possible.

Massages are a great way to recover and prepare for future running sessions.

Not only does it help to relax the body after higher intensity sessions it also can help the muscles to relax.

As much as massages can be expensive, if possible, it is a great investment to make to help your endurance performance.

If getting a massage isn’t within your budget, you can always buy massage guns on a budget and still get the many benefits of massaging.

Ultra marathons are a race which is anything longer than a marathon.

This could be anywhere from 50k – 300 miles, and could be even longer during backyard ultras!

To complete an ultra marathon takes a large commitment to train for and can be particularly grueling due to their length, the amount of time on feet and the conditions which are run in.

From what l have seen in the past, stomach distress, hallucinations (some races/racers) are only a couple of the many barriers ultra marathon runners race.

The name and concept of the half marathon first appeared in the early 1960s, since then it is a staple of endurance sport.

The current world records are as follows:

Mens: 57 minutes and 31 seconds run by Jacob Kiplimo

Womens : 1:04:02 run by Ruth Chepng’etich

The 5k distance, is a distance which has been run by athletes close to the first Olympics in history.

In this time the worlds best times include:

Berihu Aregawi who holds the 5k record finishing in 12 mins 49 seconds and 14 mins and 13 seconds for the womens record run by Beatrice Chebet

To even get close to either of these times you would need to run 2 mins 49 seconds every kilometre!

The 10k race is another event which has been completed for a number of years.
On record, the oldest 10k road race in the world is the Běchovice to Prague race which has been run since 1897.
The current world records for this race include:
Joshua Cheptegei running the distance in 26 mins 11 seconds and
Letesenbet Gidey running the distance in 29 mins and 1 second holding the womens world record.

The marathon was initially invented in 490BC by a man called Pheidippides who was an Athenian Courier who ran from the site of battle in marathon to Athens with the message of victory before collapsing and dying.

The event distance was then decided in London in 1908 as the first race was completed between the lawn of Windsor castle and finished at the royal box at the Olympic stadium, equated to the 42.2km we know today.

Since this time, we have seen incredible feats of endurance and speed, with achievements such as the sub 2 hour marathon completed by Eliud Kipchoge and the world record ran by the late Kelvin Kiptum who completed the event in 2:00:35
