Think about this next time you hear someone moan about umpires.

A standard game of netball is 60 minutes.

The ball has to be passed at least every three seconds. This results in the ball being passed (at an absolute minimum) 1,200 times a match.

Every time a player catches the ball, an umpire has to check seven things involving the player with the ball and their opponent (footwork, contact, how they got the ball, obstruction, offside etc.).

Almost simultaneously, the umpire has to look down the court and check other players are in their correct areas and are not blocking each other in their attempts to move. This could involve scanning 10 different players, while keeping one eye on the player with the ball and their opponent.

So that’s seven things, involving the player with the ball, plus potentially another 10 players to watch, each with three actions involved (contact, obstruction and offside).

That’s 38 different actions to watch for per pass, including the held ball rule. 38 times 1,200 passes equals 45,600 decisions umpires make per match. Even if that figure is split between the two umpires, that’s still 22,800 decisions each.

22,800 decisions a match! And that’s assuming players take the maximum three seconds to pass the ball. The real figure is probably much higher.

I would like to take this opportunity, as immediate past President, to thank the many supporters of PVNA during the past 42+ years. The Association is still here but as mentioned previously the Autumn season/competition for 2024 at RMIT will not go ahead. It is unfortunate; Netball in the north has changed so much over the years!
The Association will use this hiatus to try and plan how and what shape a competition can emerge.
A big thank you to all the past players, parents who have supported their children and devoted coaches who have instilled great life skills into the young players. The young umpires who have trained and achieved their badges and moved on using their learned skill. Thank you, ladies you are a credit to the Association. To all our NetSetGo facilitators, and there have been lots over the years. Great job! A special thanks to the dedicated committees who volunteered their time and efforts to offer the young netballers in Thomastown/Lalor/Epping/Mill Park/Bundoora and surrounds a local grass roots competition.
A huge thank you all around.
The present committee of PVNA will be here supporting the 2024 thriving PV Comets representative teams in their endeavours on the court. 11 & Under Tournaments/ 13 & Under (2) Riverside and tournaments/15 & Under (2) Riverside and tournaments.
In closing it hoped all prospective players/teams for 2024 are placed and ready to play for the season. If not reach out the committee have been working hard placing all players.
Stay tuned to PVNA progress moving forward.
Speaking for myself the Association has given me many lifelong friends who are cherished, so not catching up on a Saturday will be strange. Never forgotten.

It is with great sadness that the committee of Plenty Valley Netball Association delivers the following message:
Due to a continued decline and a lack of further interest this year, the PVNA committee has regretfully decided not to run a Saturday netball competition in Autumn of 2024.
Our thriving representative program, PV Comets will continue to compete and grow.
We will endeavor to assist every club, team and player to find a suitable place to continue their netball journey in 2024.
We have already made contact with various associations in the area who are happy to help.
Please reach out for further assistance on this matter.
We would like to thank all of our current and previous members for their support over our 42 years of operation.
