Just because a young athlete can do it, doesn’t mean it’s appropriate.
Children are remarkably capable, but good coaching and parenting isn’t about finding their limits as early as possible.
It’s about giving them the best chance to stay healthy, keep enjoying sport, and reach their potential over the long term (LTAD).
Guidelines exist for a reason. We should be normalising athlete development, not extreme performances from children.

First Aus Champs 100m podium🥉🇦🇺🌟
A brilliant reward for a season of consistent, high-level performances and a great result despite injury in the final.
The athlete maketh the coach.

Five members of the squad made the trip to Brisbane to take on the best junior athletes in the country.
The girls stepped up and competed strongly across the board, gaining valuable experience for future seasons. It was impressive to see how they handled the pressure of the national stage and adapted to a few challenges along the way.

Hard to single out highlights with many impressive results and PBs…
Jayla bettered her 200m PB + junior state records and took out the open women’s 100m (at 14yo) in a very very very close race⚡️💥
With no one else being in Ellie’s U18 400m race, we were happy it was combined with the open women so she at least had some people to run with, even though she wasn’t ‘racing’ them, she managed to finish 3rd overall in her first state champs appearance 🔥
The U18 boys all hit a PB in their short sprint events despite some niggles.
Alec went sub 54sec for the first time and should improve again next season with a full prep vs 10 weeks.
Our U14 short sprinters battled each other and all ran PB’s ⭐️
Milla picked up some medals and a PB in the short sprints
Piper, in her first year of track, continued her improvement season over the middle distance events, narrowly edging out training partner Amarli.
The Young brothers showed a bit of spark 🧨 dropping PB’s in both their races.
Pirri just got through the weekend after a less than ideal lead up.
For those interested in going, they’ll train for the upcoming Aus champs next month.
Otherwise there’s a few tired bodies that should be keen for an off-season but hungry for more next season
Well done team 🏃🏻♂️➡️🏃🏼♀️➡️

A great reward for the time and effort these girls consistently put into their training which includes fitting in a quick running sesh before heading to practice on the beach and in the water 🥶
Also well done to their respective surf club coaches who play an important role supporting their development.

I saw a video 12 months ago that changed something small in how I coach.
The idea was that instead of telling athletes “I’m proud of you,” tell them “You should be proud of yourself.”
It’s a subtle shift but the goal is to help athletes build intrinsic motivation, self belief and self-worth, rather than relying on external validation and approval from others.
Last night one of my athletes ran a PB and exceeded their goal for the season.
I messaged them saying I was stoked for them.
They replied:
“I’m so proud.”
That’s the moment I’m hoping for as a coach and there’s no better message I could receive.
Too many athletes think they need to perform to make their parents, coach, friends, followers… or even the dog proud.
But the real win is when they finish a race and think:
“I’m proud of myself.”
If you’re a parent, coach, friend (or dog) maybe try it next time.
And if you’re an athlete, be careful not to fall into the trap of chasing validation from others.

Tassie’s fastest 14yo has been given an incredible opportunity at this weekends Hobart Track Classic.
Jayla will race the women’s 100m with some of the fastest in the country including Tassie’s fastest ever, Chelsea Scolyer and Olympic 100m semi finalist, Bree Rizzo 🔥
Moments like this are about learning, gaining experience, stretching yourself and taking opportunities when they come your way.
